St Cross College offers the following Scholarships for which it invites applications from students intending to study for a postgraduate degree in the University of Oxford commencing in or including the academical year 1998-99.
The College proposes to make an election to the Emanoel Lee Junior Research Fellowship, tenable for three years from 1 October 1998.
Applicants should be in the process of completing their doctoral dissertations, or have obtained the D.Phil/Ph.D. or equivalent within the last five years, but the College will exercise flexibility in the case of applicants whose academic careers have been interrupted.

St Cross College provides for postgraduate students only and is dedicated to their needs.
Fellows and students share all the College's facilities equally; for instance, there is a single common room and bar, and no separate High Table and so there are daily opportunities for Graduates to meet and mix with Fellows of the college.
The College admits graduates to read for postgraduate degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University (excluding the BCL and Magister Juris) in all subjects.

St Cross College proposes to elect to a Visiting Fellowship in Modern Greek Studies to be held during the academic year 2002–3.
The college also expects to offer a further fellowship on similar terms for the academic year 2003–4 and invites applications for that year as well.
Applications should be addressed to the Master, St Cross College, Oxford OX1 3LZ, by Monday, 8 July for the year 2002–3 and by 28 February 2003 for the year 2003–4.

The College proposes to make an election to this Junior Research Fellowship, tenable from 1 October 1998 (or from another date by agreement) for one year in the first instance.
The Fellowship is to be held in conjunction with a position in the Department of Ophthalmology, involving research work in the general area of the biochemistry of the lens; it will be suitable for graduates in biochemistry, physiology, and allied subjects.
Applicants should have submitted their doctoral dissertations by the date of taking up the appointment or have obtained the D.Phil./Ph.D. or equivalent within the last five years, but the College will exercise flexibility in the case of applicants whose academic careers have been interrupted.

That college, which provided for the eduacation of Cistercian monks, was abolished during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
In its place a new college dedicated to St. John was founded in 1555 under the patronage of Sir Thomas White, a former Lord Mayor of London.

On 23 May 2001, the Warden of St Antony's wrote again to the Ambassador requesting that one of the signatories to the original letter from Oxford - preferably one of Dr Xu's former teachers - be allowed to visit him.
Press reports of Dr Xu's trial and sentencing reached the College in early February and a press statement was released on 5 February outlining the facts of the case at that time.
Dr Xu Zerong, a student of St Antony's College from 1989 to 1999, and a respected specialist on China's foreign relations, was sentenced by the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court in southern China on January 10th 2002 to 13 years in prison.

William Freeman, professor and chairman of the Department of Exercise Science, will present a paper at Oxford University on May 6, in a conference observing the 50th anniversary of Sir Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute mile.
The conference on “Roger Bannister and the Four-Minute Mile” will be held at St. Cross College, Oxford, and will examine the influence of Bannister’s race, described by Sports Illustrated as one of the two greatest sport achievements of the 20th century.
The conference is one of several observances scheduled at Oxford during the anniversary week.
