Sewter records this design as being based on that which was originally used in St Edmund Hall Chapel, Oxford, in 1865 but I believe that the figure of Christ design was taken from a cartoon by Burne-Jones which was first drawn for Amington in 1864.
Both the Amington and St Edmund Hall designs feature angels but those at the base are omitted from the cartoon.
The depiction of St John first appeared in St Edmund Hall Chapel, Oxford, in 1865 and can also be seen in Haywards Heath (1867), Haltwhistle (1872), Troutbeck (1873), Brown Edge and Llantrisant (1874), Fochabers and Thornton (1876).

We do not know when St. Edmund Hall was founded, but it was certainly in existence early in the thirtenth century.
The first reference to the Hall was in the rent roll of Oseney Abbey and its name derives from St. Edmund of Abingdon, who is traditionally believed to have lived and taught here in the early thirteenth century.
After Oseney Abbey was suppressed, the Hall was acquired but not absorbed by the Queen's College in 1557 and although for centuries Queen's appointed the Principal of the Hall, we continued to live a separate and self-determining life.

St Edmund Hall has become the first Oxford University college to be granted a licence to perform civil marriages by Oxfordshire County Council.
Though it was only incorporated as a college in 1957, St Edmund Hall’s history dates back to the thirteenth century, and it is the sole survivor of the medieval halls which first provided accommodation and tuition for scholars of the University.
Receiving the licence, Mr Bourne-Taylor said: ‘It is fitting that St Edmund Hall, which is the oldest surviving Educational Hall within the University, should be the first college to be licensed to have civil ceremonies performed within its precincts.

He was born in the Thames-side town of Abingdon, south of Oxford, in about 1175; the son of a merchant, his family name ‘Rich’ is in fact a reference to the traditional profession of his family.
In trying to restore the balance after this stormy time, Edmund was decisive, but just, in his dealings with King Henry III, helped by the strong team he built up which included Richard de Wych, better known to us as St. Richard of Chichester.
Edmund died in France on November 16, 1240, while on a journey to Rome in connection with the Church/State disputes in England, and is buried at the former Cistercian Abbey of Pontigny, some 100 miles S.E. of Paris.

In 1951 Emden's health broke down and he resigned the principalship of St Edmund Hall at the age of 63 and came to live with his mother in this house in Headington.
