St Ives railway station is linked to the Paddington to Penzance main rail route via the St Ives branch line which runs regular services to St Erth station.
St Ives is also well known from the nursery rhyme and riddle "As I Was Going to St Ives", although it is not clear whether the rhyme refers to the Cornish town or one of several other St Ives around the country.

St Erth (Cornish: Lannudhno/Praze Pras) is a village and civil parish in the Penwith district of Cornwall, United Kingdom.
The parish shares boundaries with Ludgvan in the west, Hayle in the north, St Hilary in the south and the district of Kerrier in the east.
The current church of St Erth was built around 1215, though an older church is said to have stood on St Erth Hill overlooking the village.

For purposes of conducting the 1851 Census, the Parish of St. Erth was divided into five Enumeration Districts.
Erth Enumeration Districts: ED 1a Enumerator: Henry James Harvey All that part of the Parish of St. Erth which lies to the North of the Road leading from Joffra to the Churchtown as far West as Chenhalls to Hayle River, including Foundry, Foundry hill, Trelissick, Mellenear, Joffra & Chenhalls.
The 1851 Census at St. Erth is available on microfilm #0221071 available in many parts of the world through Family History Centers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

 Branch Railway from St Erth to St Ives
The route chosen ran from St Ives Road (re-named St Erth) station on the West Cornwall Railway, along the western side of Hayle Estuary to Lelant, and thence across the sand dunes and around the cliffs to Carbis Valley and on to St Ives - a short but wonderfully varied and beautiful line.
The St Ives branch was the last railway ever built to Brunel's celebrated broad gauge of 7 feet 0-1/4 inches, though a third rail, permitting mixed gauge working, ran from St Erth to Lelant Quays.
Prior to the great decline of the fishing industry between the wars, a heavy fish traffic was carried while the number of passengers carried during the summer weekends rose to such levels during the middle years of the 20th century as to tax its limited capacity to the utmost.

 TREWHELLA FAMILY OF ST. ERTH & TOWEDNACK, CORNWALL
Joane was married in 1654 at St. Erth.
As there is a large gap between the birth of Dorothy in 1608 at St. Erth, and Joane in Towednack in 1623, there must be other children born to James at Towednack during the time of the missing registers.
Since the next generation of Towednack Trewhellas includes an Honor, we can assume that the Honor Trewhella who married at St. Erth was another daughter of James the Churchwarden, and sister of Joane; and that the later Honor was named for her.

It is bounded on the north by the parish of St Erth, on the east by Breage and Germoe, on the north by Perranuthnoe and the sea, and on the west by Ludgvan.
St Hilary has abounded in mines, especially in the manors of Treveneage and Tregurtha, but the most remarkable was a mine called Wheal Fortune which extended into the adjoining parish of Ludgvan.
The parish church of St. Hilary is about two miles and a half from Marazion; but there was a chapel-of-ease provided in that town, which later became its parish church when that parish was formed in 1813.

St Erth station is still blessed with lower quadrant semaphore signals from Great Western Railway (GWR) days; i.e.
Upon arrival at St Ives, the weather was so bad it was decided to abandon the venture into town for lunch (quite some distance) - we jumped back on the train and made our way back to St Erth and changed trains there for the run to Penzance!
Before the level crossing, St Erth is protected by a 2-aspect colour light signal, fitted with both a theatre and a shunt dolly.

The garden of St Erth at Blackwood, an hours drive from Melbourne, was until recently, owned by the well-known horticultural writer Tommy Garnett, and has since become part of Digger's Seeds.
The garden is open to visitors and has a nursery attached which sells many of the plants visitors see at St Erth.
The Garden of St Erth is open 7 days a week, 10am-4 pm.

The entrance to St Erth Pits is a little way along this narrower path between the trees on your right.
The picture of St Erth in Pliocene times, derived from the deposits and fossils they contain, is one of coastal sand-dunes which were gradually overwhelmed by beach sand being deposited by a rising sea.

Nigel Walker, the County Councillor for the St Erth Area, has been pressing for a solution since the cut was first proposed.
"The residents of St Erth have been particularly badly hit by the recent changes; the axing of the bus that took local children to the local school really brought home the extent to which the need to make a profit from bus services acts as a disservice to the community.
Doris Ansari, the Executive Member for Lifelong Learning, is delighted that County Council officers have come up with a solution to the problem facing the St Erth parents and their children.
