At first Eusebius refused to attend it because he foresaw that the Arian bishops, who were supported by the emperor, would not accept the decrees of the Nicene council and would insist upon the condemnation of St. Athanasius.
Eusebius vehemently protested against the unjust condemnation of St. Athanasius and, despite the threats of the emperor, refused to attach his signature to the document.
Having arrived at Vercelli in 363, he assisted the zealous St. Hilary of Poitiers in the suppression of Arianism in the Western Church, and was one of the chief opponents of the Arian Bishop Auxientius of Milan.

From Vercelli the Gospel spread through the valley of the Po and its environs; towards the end of the fourth century, perhaps even during the episcopate of St. Eusebius, new dioceses were erected.
In 1817 the Diocese of Vercelli, then suffragan of the archbishopric of Turin (but previously of the archbishopric of Milan) was made an archdiocese, the first archbishop being Giuseppe di Grimaldi.

It was a double cloister in which the nuns lived according to the Rule of St. Benedict, the lay brothers according to the Statutes of the Cistercians and the canons according to the Rule of St. Augustine.
Like St. Vincent de Paul, he is a sign of the flowering of sanctity that occurred in France in the generation born after the reforms of the Council of Trent.

He was a lector in Rome before he went to Vercelle, the present Vercelli, and when the bishop died in 340 Eusebius was acclaimed bishop of that city by the clergy and the people and received episcopal consecration at the hands of Pope Julius I on 15 December.
In 354(?), Pope Liberius sent Eusebius and Bishop Lucifer of Cagliari to the Emperor Constantius II at Arles in Gaul, for the purpose of inducing him to convoke a council expected to end the dissentions between the Arian and the Trinitarian Christians.

Eusebius devoted himself to the care of the people; he was especially concerned with improving the sanctity and brotherhood of the clergy, so that they might provide the laity with a good example.
The pope sent Eusebius to the emperor to ask for a council which would end the Arian controversy; however, as Eusebius had feared, the Arians gained the upper hand, and with the emperor's support they rejected Eusebius's demand that the Nicene Creed be accepted as a statement of Church teaching.
He worked closely with St. Athanasius of Egypt and St. Hilary of Poitiers to reduce the influence of Arianism, and he approved the Church's policy of leniency toward those bishops who had wavered in their support of the faith.

The church was financed by St Eusebius of Bologna, and is first mentioned in 474.
Until 1807, the church and adjacent monastery belonged to the Celestines, a Benedictine order founded in 1259 by St Pietro de Murrone, later Pope St Celestine V. The order was dispersed by the French Revolution, and died out in Italy in 1807.
The relics of St Eusebius of Bologna, who financed the church, are interred beneath the high altar.

Eusebius, who was born in Sardinia, and became first bishop of Vercelli, between Turin and Milan, was a scholar and also a roving ambassador for orthodoxy; his journeys took him to Alexandria and Antioch.
But he also fell foul of the Emperor Constantius, himself an Arian, and was exiled to the Near East.

But in Matthew 27:56 we are told that James and Joseph were sons of a Mary distinct from the Blessed Virgin, and that Simon and Judas were not brothers of James and Joseph, but seemingly children of a brother of St. Joseph.
And it will be interesting to see what St. Eusebius of Vercelli looked like, when LIB gets her post up tonight.
