It lies on the west shore of the picturesque estuary of the river Fowey, close to the water's edge, and sheltered by a screen of hills.
Its church of St Nicholas is said to have been built in the 14th century, on the site of a still older edifice dedicated to St Finbar of Cork.
Its main features are St Saviour's Chapel, with an ancient roodstone, and the remains of Hall House, which was garrisoned during the civil wars of the 17th century.

Finbar Parish, Burbank, California, was erected October 31, 1938, and a temporary church constructed in 1940.
At first, the sisters teaching at St. Finbar School lived in the convent of Saint Joseph Hospital, Burbank, about seven blocks from the school, and were under the authority of the hospital superior.
Finbar Elementary School continues to be operated by the parish, and celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 1994-1995.

Another visitor to St. Anthony’s, Robert W. Callanan, a member of St. Mary of the Annunciation in Melrose, said the elevation was well-deserved.

St Finbar's House, with the two top Junior athletes of the school, got off to a good start in -the inter-House Championship competition, and were well ahead hy mid-afternoon.
The first athletic event after the interval, the second heat of the Tug-o-war, was won by St. Benedict's House, which went on to defeat St. Winifred in the final, later in the afternoon.
Barnabas dominated the relays and was thus able to establish a slender lead over the pace-setting St. Finbar in the race for the House Championship.

The keenest competition was in the Senior division where St. Barnabas, St. Gregory and St. Finbar were locked in a close struggle.
Gregory and St. Finbar battled to a draw, while St. Barnabas dropped a vital point by drawing with the lowly placed St. Winifred.
Competition was keen in both divisions and several promising players were spotted, who, in a few years, should have the honour of wearing the coveted blue jersey and battling in true Presentation spirit to preserve our traditional prestige on the football field.

When in 1943, the seminary of St. John Vianney and the Ugandan Martyrs was opened by Archbishop Finbar Ryan, the majority of parishes in the archdiocese were administered by the Dominicans from Ireland.
The archbishop stressed the importance of guiding priestly vocations to the diocese, a policy that has been responsible for the establishment of a strong diocesean clergy, who at the time of writing well exceed the number of Irish Dominicans working in the diocese.
The community of friars transferred down to St. Finbar's church, setting up a home in the house of the Immaculate conception close by the church.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is a magnificent structure, a grand monument to the faith of thousands -- past and present -- and a wonderful house for the Church.
Called the Cathedral of St. John and St. Finbar, it was consecrated on April 6, 1854.
Cathedral Fund-raising for a new cathedral continued for the next 45 years, and the cornerstone for the present Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was laid in January 1890.

 St Finbar's School - History
It has a population of approximately 350 pupils from K - 6 and provides for children in the area of the St Finbars Parish, which extends from Warrimoo in the West to Lapstone in the East, at the escarpment of the Mountains.
Finbar's Primary school had its beginnings back in 1912, when the Sisters of St. Joseph taught the railway workers' children in our original Church.
A wooden school building was opened in 1954 to accommodate forty children from Kindergarten to Year 3, again staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Born in Connaught, Ireland, and baptized Lochan, he was educated at Kilmacahil, Kilkenny, where the monks named him Fionnbharr (white head) because of his light hair; he is also known as Bairre and Barr.
Supposedly, on another visit to Rome the Pope wanted to consecrate him a bishop but was deterred by a vision, notifying the pope that God had reserved that honor to Himself, and Finbar was consecrated from heaven and then returned to Ireland.
At any rate, he may have preached in Scotland, definitely did in southern Ireland, lived as a hermit on a small island at Lough Eiroe, and then, on the river Lee, founded a monastery that developed into the city of Cork, of which he was the first bishop.

Originally built for St Peter's Anglican Church, East Sydney, the organ was sold and moved to Glenbrook after St Peter's church closed in the 1990s.
The church was blessed and opened in August 1912 for dual purpose as a school and it was named St. Finbar.
The Sisters of St. Joseph taught school during the week and resided in a cottage lent by a parishioner.
