St Giles' Circus the intersection of Oxford Street, New Oxford Street, Charing Cross Road and Tottenham Court Road in the West End of London.
The area was historically known as St Giles.
The Church of St Giles in the field next to the Inn was founded in 1116 by Matilda of Boulogne as a leper church and hospital whose estate ran south as far as todays Shaftesbury Avenue.

New Oxford Street [0.2 mile (0.3km) in length] is a shopping street in London's West End, an eastward continuation of Oxford Street proper from St Giles' Circus to Bloomsbury Way, Holborn.
New Oxford Street suffers from bus congestion in the evenings, often the entire length of the road is one big bus traffic jam.
There is a plan to solve the bus traffic problems by using a contraflow on Bloomsbury Way.

It was built up rapidly between 1677 and 1683 when the Bishop was fund-raising for the planned Soho parish church which he dedicated St Anne's in 1686.
In 1711 the vestry of St Anne's Soho put the population of the parish at 8,133 and forty percent of these were thought to be French, mostly lodgers rather than householders.
This was partly due to the influx of Huguenots to Soho when Charles II offered 'all such afflicted Protestants' his royal protection in 1681 as they fled from the active discrimination of Louis XIV.
