Gregory does justice to Origen by assuring us that he excited them to virtue no less by his example than by his words; and tells us that he inculcated that in all things the most valuable knowledge is that of the first cause, and thus he led them on to theology.
St Gregory of Nyssa gives a good deal of information in his panegyric of the saint with regard to the deeds which earned him the title of Wonderworker, but there is little doubt that a good deal of it is legendary.
Gregory had a formidable power over evil spirits; he altered the course of rivers in the name of Christ ; he dried up a lake that was a cause of dissension between two brothers; and his foretelling of the future made him equal with the other prophets.

St Gregory of Nazianzus, known by the Orthodox Church as St. Gregory the Theologian (?329 - ?390 AD), was the son of the Bishop of Nazianzus (Cappadocia).
Gregory received the best education available, at the University of Athens, where St. Basil, his lifelong friend, and Julian, the future emperor, were fellow-students.
During the council, St. Gregory was appointed Bishop of Constantinople and installed in the basilica of St Sophia.

Gregory's father was Gordianus, a wealthy patrician, probably of the famous gens Amicia, who owned large estates in Sicily and a mansion on the Caelian Hill in Rome, the ruins of which, apparently in a wonderful state of preservation, still await excavation beneath the Church of St. Andrew and St. Gregory.
Gregory's mind and memory were both exceptionally receptive, and it is to the effect produced on him by these disasters that we must attribute the tinge of sadness which pervades his writings and especially his clear expectation of a speedy end to the world.
Gregory of Tours tells us that in grammar, rhetoric and dialectic he was so skilful as to be thought second to none in all Rome, and it seems certain also that he must have gone through a course of legal studies.

Gregory I, pope from 590 to 604 and the last of the Latin Fathers of the Western Church, was born the scion of the patrician gens Anicia and the son of a Roman senator in 540.
Italy was being ravaged by the Lombards, and confronted by this fury the Imperial Exarchate in Ravenna was helpless.
Gregory was also active in the liturgical reform of the Roman Rite, though admittedly the extent of his actual contributions to the Gregorian Sacramentary are still to be ascertained.

In sending the formal announcement of his elevation to Henry IV of Germany, he took occasion to indicate frankly the attitude, which, as sovereign pontiff, he was prepared to assume in dealing with the Christian princes, and, with a note of grave personal warning besought the king not to bestow his approval.
During the year 1074 the pope's mind was also greatly occupied by the project of an expedition to the East for the deliverance of the Oriental Christians from the oppression of the Seljuk Turks.
He was beatified by Gregory XIII in 1584, and canonized in 1728 by Benedict XIII.

In the Orthodox Church Gregory is known as the Theologian because of his influential orations ("The Five Theological Orations") dealing with the Trinity and Christology.
