Saint Helier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Helier (Jèrriais: St Hélyi) is one of the twelve parishes, and the largest town in Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands in the English Channel.
The medieval hagiographies of Helier, the patron saint martyred in Jersey and after whom the parish and town are named, suggest a picture of a small fishing village on the dunes between the marshy land behind and the high-water mark.
Although the Parish Church of St Helier is now some considerable distance from the sea, at the time of its original construction it was on the edge of the dunes at the closest practical point to the offshore islet called the Hermitage (site of Helier's witness and martyrdom).

Saint Helier - Saint Hélyi - Saint Hélier
The Parish of St. Helier is one of the twelve Parishes of Jersey, and is home to about a third of the population.
Helier started performing miracles (among them: negotiating with the rabbits that plagued his garden so that they could share the vegetables that grew there; curing blindness; removing a snake from the mouth of a man who had had the misfortune of having it slither in there while he was asleep).
Marculf left Helier alone on his rock, and Helier remained there for fifteen years, only eating once a week, until he was so weakened from hunger and the rigours of life on his exposed rock that he could barely move.

In 1649, from what was then the marketplace in St. Helier, Laurens Hamptonne proclaimed loyalty to Charles II, following the execution of his father, Charles I. The first such proclomation of allegiance in the British Isles.
The young Helier was understandably rather upset at this turn of events and ran away eventually turning to another early Christian missionary, St.Marcouf, for advice.
Over the following 15 years Helier gained the respect of the pagan islanders as they believed that his powers of prayer were keeping the marauding Norman pirates from invading the island.

The St. Helier RNLI high-speed inflatable Inshore Lifeboat "Eve Pank" was called out just before 12:00 noon today, 20th October, to assist a Hobie Cat sailing boat capsised in St. Aubin's Bay.
With strong winds and choppy conditions, the two members of the Hobie crew were having difficultly in righting the boat and were swept onto rocks on the west side of Elizabeth Castle by the prevailing swell.
A rope was attached to the Hobie mast and used to tow the boat clear of the rocks; once a suitably safe distance had been established, the Hobie was righted and left to set sail for St. Aubins.
