One kind of early 1940s urban blues was the jump blues, a style heavily influenced by big band music and characterized by the use of the guitar in the rhythm section, a jazzy, up-tempo sound, declamatory vocals and the use of the saxophone or other brass instruments.
The Memphis blues style is mostly influenced by jug bands, such as the Memphis Jug Band or the Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers.

 Encyclopedia: St. James Infirmary Blues
It would seem that the location is more likely the St. James Infirmary in New Orleans; Louis Armstrong was from there, and that city is home to important jazz and blues traditions.
It is likewise hard to determine where the infirmary of the title was, although there is in fact a St. James Infirmary in San Francisco, California, and there used to be one in New Orleans, Louisiana.
At the end of the lyric, we learn that the narrator is staying in the St. James hotel.

This is even true of "Gambler's Blues." In the most prevalent version, the narrator is in a bar and hears the tale of woe from Big Joe McKennedy (or something similar), who is just back from having visited his lover's corpse at the St. James Infirmary.
John reworked "St. James Infirmary" into "Touro Infirmary," a lament for the death of his hard-living "runnin' partner," who had requested "the finest whores on Bourbon Street" and Professor Longhair for his funeral, before he ended up dead on arrival at Touro (a real New Orleans hospital).
"ST. JAMES INFIRMARY," IT TURNS OUT, is an offshoot of an extraordinary song cycle that is the subject of a 1960 Folkways Records release called The Unfortunate Rake: A Study in the Evolution of a Ballad, containing 20 songs and extensive notes by Kenneth S. Goldstein.

Whether it is labeled as Delta Blues, Piedmont Blues, Folk Blues, or just good old-fashioned, down-home Country Blues, traditional acoustic Blues music forms a main part of our American Musical Roots and is a key part of the cultural heritage of African-Americans.
Because the role traditional acoustic Blues music played in the development of American music and, more importantly, because we love to listen to it, the Cascade Blues Association (CBA) teamed up with the Portland Saturday Market to present the Acoustic Roots and Blues Heritage Festival on July 16, 2000.
We are fortunate in the Pacific Northwest to have so many talented musicians who not only carry on the tradition of acoustic blues, but also continue to breathe new life into an essential art form.
