  St Marks Square, Venice
St Mark's Square, "la Piazza" for short, is Venice on parade, the point around which Venetian life revolves.
Considered one of the finest squares in the world, it conveys a perfect impression of the city's former greatness since round it are grouped the buildings on which were centered the civic and religious life of the Republic.
Having been paved with marble in 1735 (the big white squares originally marked the sites where the individual craftsmen's guilds were allowed to erect their market stalls), the square finally acquired its present aspect with the building of the Napoleonic Wing.

 St. MarkÂ’s Square
It was constructed by the Serenissima Republic over the course of several centuries: at the beginning, in the 12th century it was just the space in front of the Basilica, but in subsequent centuries it was conceived of more as a space to be used for events of a religious and political nature.
The decision to build a private chapel for the Doge, which is in fact what St. MarkÂ’s Basilica is, brought about the origin of the square and indeed conditioned its development over the years just as it imposed a dual religious and political character on both the church and the space and buildings around.
The religious function of the Square as a continuation of the church immediately becomes evident if one observes the facade of the Basilica.

Napoleon called the Piazza San Marco "the finest drawing room in Europe." That description may have been a little off-base--there's no ceiling, and where's the sofa?--but the fact remains that St. Mark's is a far nicer place for sitting and schmoozing than the average living room or hotel lobby.
