In the midst of French culture, exploration, and settlement during the late eighteenth century, St. Mary bears the distinction of being a primarily Anglo-Protestant settlement in the midst of French-Catholic Acadiana.
By 1840, St. Mary Parish was recognized as one of the state’s major shippers of sugar.
Mary Parish is also home to the Chitimacha Indian Reservation and Museum, Cypremort State Park, the International Alligator Festival, and the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival.

Both EPA and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality believe any instream mixing near MSP's outfall is probably influenced far more by randomly independent variables such as discharge velocity, wind, boat traffic, and lock operation than by tidal action.
The selection of pollutant species for the ambient air monitoring seems reasonable in that it should be representative of VOCs associated with incoming feed material; the selection should also contain several substances known to be associated with incomplete combustion (e.g., chloroform and benzene) (R-30).

Tuesday, September 28, nine LGS and SGS (Shreveport Geological Society) members had the opportunity to visit the North American Salt Company Cote Blanche Mine in St. Mary Parish.
The four northernmost of the islands (Cote Blanche is the most southerly occurring of these four) are roughly evenly spaced (about 7.5 miles apart), with the southernmost island (Belle Isle) located about 22 miles southeast of Cote Blanche (map).
