St Matthais Old Church is one of only three extant commonwealth churches (the others are the Holy Trinity Church, Berwick on Tweed and the church in Staunton Harold, Leicester built by Sir Robert Shirley a Royalist baron).
It combines both Classical and Gothic elements, similar to St Katherine Kree consecrated in the City of London in 1631 Internally the roof is supported by eight Tuscan columns, seven made of oak and one of stone.

Three of the earliest of such monuments by his hand are those of Thomas Chatterton in the church of St Mary Redcliffe at Bristol (1780), of Mrs Morley in Gloucester Cathedral (1784), and of the Rev. T and Mrs Margaret Ball in Chichester Cathedral (1785).
One example, the monument to George Steevens originally in St Matthais Old Church is now to be found in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
Flaxman's complicated monuments in the round, such as the three in Westminster Abbey and the four in St Paul's Cathedral, are considered too "heavy"; but his simple monuments in relief are of finer quality.

Following the First Indian War of Independence, the EIC was wound up and Poplar Chapel became St Matthais, an Anglican Parish Church.
Poplar was heavily bombed during the Second World War, but St Matthais survived with only shards of shrapnel buried in some of the walls.

His paper, located in the library of the St. Louis seminary, includes a few pages of the priest's diary, and a couple of signed affidavits of second-hand testimony, mostly from pastors/professors recalling conversations about the case with the gentleman who was the Sem president at the time.
But the Church viewed from man's perspective in time has changed.
