The 65m-tall Powder Tower was begun in 1475 during the reign of King Vladislav II Jagiello to form one of the 13 entrances to the Old Town.
Old Town's ancient town hall was established in 1338 after the agreement of King John of Luxemburg to set up a town council.
Used to mark the boundary between the Old Town and the New Town, its name dates from the time when the church was a part of the town wall during the fortification of the Old Town.

It combines both Classical and Gothic elements, similar to St Katherine Cree consecrated in the City of London in 1631 Internally the roof is supported by eight Tuscan columns, seven made of oak and one of stone.

The choir was moved from the Chancel to the West End of the church where the present Karl Wilhelm organ was built to replace the old memorial organ.

The parish grew so rapidly that the church was found to be too small to serve its needs and on June 18, 1925, a new church of red brick with sandstone trimming was begun to replace the wooden church.
The interstate dissected the parish, causing the church and rectory to be east of the freeway and the school, convent, and a majority of the parishioners west of the freeway.

Whilst researching the memorial inscriptions in St Matthias Church in Poplar, I came across the memorial of Margaret Woolmore, the wife of John Woolmore, a Captain in the East India Company’s (HEIC/HEIC’s) Marine Service.
He had a number of brothers and sisters, all of whom were baptised in the Poplar area, an indication that the family had links with the East India Company because the only real employment in the East London area was through the EIC or Blackwall docks.
He stood for the seat of St Ives but was defeated, after which he effectively retired from politics.
