Herringfleet was occupied by the Roman Empire, and archaeologists have made a number of finds, including a Roman bronze 'patera', a 'soup ladle' vessel with the maker's name 'Quattenus' on the handle, and a Roman nether mill-stone of trachyte, originally imported from Saxony or Koblenz on the Rhine.

The 1658 arch over the churchyard's entrance is crowned with a cluster of skulls, a Memento Mori carved from the stone, and it bears a Latin inscription which translates as 'death is a light to me'.
The pulpit is 17th century, originally came from the now destroyed St Benet's Gracechurch and may be a Gibbons work, and there are swordrests and Communion rails which date to the same period.
However, despite its ingrained sense of intimacy, there is one other aspect of St Olave's which adds to its atmosphere, and that is its most important historic connection: the parishioner Samuel Pepys.

Traditionally it is thought that the priest of St Olaves helped Countess Gythia to escape to the Continent in 1068 when William The Conqueror began his siege of Exeter.
The building can be veiwed in all its glory from the yard of St Olaves Hotel who part-lease the accomodation within the building which was originally the Benedictine Monks' refectory, a vast high-ceilinged hall built in 1070.

At the Bury St Edmunds town meeting on 1 November a formal request was made for a parish poll to take place.
In accordance with the law governing parish polls, the names and addresses of ten Bury St Edmunds electors were submitted to back the call.
The Returning Officer at St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Deborah Cadman, is responsible for administering all elections within the borough, including parish polls, and arrangements have now been made for it to be held on Thursday 2 December.

At St. Olaves the navigation swings round and comes within yards of Haddiscoe New Cut, the canal which links the River Waveney to the River Yare at Reedham.
Olaves is not quite the great holiday resort it once was but the eastern side of the river is quite nice to walk along.
The railway to Lowestoft has followed the river on the west bank since St. Olaves but it crosses the route on a swing bridge at Somerleyton and then heads off to the east.
