JOHN HENRY NEWMAN - LoveToKnow Article on JOHN HENRY NEWMAN   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In the same year he was appointed vicar of St Marys, to which the chapelry of Littlemore was attached, and Pusey was made regius professor of Hebrew.
Its aim was to secure for the Church of England a definite basis of doctrine and discipline, in case either of disestablishment or of a determination of High Churchmen to quit the establishment, an eventuality that was thought not impossible in view of the States recent high-handed dealings with the sister established Church of Ireland.
The teaching of the tracts was supplemented by Newmans Sunday afternoon sermons at St Marys, the influence of which, especially over the junior members of the university, was increasingly marked during a period of eight years.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ST. ANN'S
Ann's Bay, located in the northern part of Victoria County on Cape Breton Island, is quite a large body of water, which, together with the surrounding countryside, hills and forests, is reminiscent of the Highlands of Scotland.
Ann's Bay was ice-locked in winter and spring, and the entrance to Sydney Harbour was too wide to be defended easily.
Any history of St. Ann's, whether it be of the Church or of the social, economic and educational development of the area, must reckon with this notable man. In St. Ann's, the Scottish community on the whole was patterned after the Clan society of ancient Scotland.

PEMBROKESHIRE - LoveToKnow Article on PEMBROKESHIRE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
During the 6th century St David, or Dewi Sant, moved the chief seat of South Welsh monastic and ecclesiastical life from Caerleon-on-Usk to his native place Menevia, which, known in consequence as Tyddewi, or St Davids, continued a centre of religious and educational activity until the Reformation, a period of 1000 years.
With the exception of the cathedral at St Davids and the principal churches of Haverfordwest and Tenby, the parish churches of Pembrokeshire are for the most part small, but many are ancient and possess fine monuments or other objects of interest, especially in Little England beyond Wales.
Of the ancient preceptory of the Knights of St John at Slebech scarcely a trace remains, but of the college of St Mary at St Davids founded by Bishop Houghton in 1377, the shell of the chapel survives in fair preservation.
