 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Abenakis
They are now represented by the Amalectites on the St. John River, New Brunswick, and Quebec (820); the Passamaquoddies, on the bay of that name, in Maine (300); the Penobscots, at Old Town, Maine (400), and the Abnakis at St. Francis and Becancourt, Quebec (430).
When their principal town, Norridgewock, was taken, and their missionary, Rasle, was killed (1724), the greater part of them removed to St. Francis, in the province of Quebec, Canada, whither other refugees from the New England tribes had preceded them.
Subsequently, other missionaries like Bigot, Thury, and de la Chasse laboured among them, but three years after the murder of Father Rasle, that is to say in 1727, when Fathers Syvesme and Lauverjat withdrew, there was no resident pastor in Maine, though the Indians were visited by priests from time to time.

1840 US Census, Aroostook, Maine: Madawaska Settlements
The section of the census that is under "Madawaska North of the St.John River" covers communities running from across the river from Hamlin, Maine, to the St. Francis River.
In this part of Aroostook County, there were no people listed under "free colored" people; and obviously no slaves (Maine had entered the Union in 1820 as a free state).
In the two Madawaska divisions, the vast majority of people were employed in agriculture; only 5 were not, and all five were listed under "learned professions and engineers." My guess is that all five were school teachers, since the census identifies five schools (listed under specific names; probably the teachers).

The Border Dispute and the "Aroostook War"
The agreement was that Maine provisionally yield to the United States all its claim to soil and jurisdiction in the region north of the St.John and east of the St. Francis.
In addition, Maine was reimbursed for its expenses in patrolling the disputed region prior to the treaty; and Maine and Massachusetts were to receive shares in the "Disputed Territory Fund" that had been collected by New Brunswick from fines levied against those who illegally took timber from the territory.
Jay's Treaty set the eastern line of the border of the state of Maine, but left the determination of the rest of the border--the definition of the "Highlands" which were to be the border from the point where the line crossed them to the head of the Connecticut River--to a mixed commission of arbitration.
