  Basilica of St John, St john church
The church of St John was changed into a marvelous basilica during the region of Emperor Justinian (527 -565 AD).
Raised by two steps and covered with marble, the tomb of St John was under the central dome, that was once carried by the four columns at the corners.
With the invasion of Turks, the chapel was used as a mosque in the 14th century; unfortunately Basilica of Saint John became unusable due to the serious earthquake in the same century.

John was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of James the Greater.
John alone remained near his beloved Master at the foot of the Cross on Calvary with the Mother of Jesus and the pious women, and took the desolate Mother into his care as the last legacy of Christ (John 19:25-27).
The feast of St. John before the Latin Gate, supposed to commemorate the dedication of the church near the Porta Latina, is first mentioned in the Sacramentary of Adrian I (772-95).

John the Evangelist apparently came into our fraternal system somewhere towards the close of the sixteenth century; at least, we find the earliest authentic Lodge records' reference to St. John the Evangelist in Edinborough in 1599, although earlier mentions are made, such as "The Fraternity of St. John" that existed in Cologne in 1430.
John the Evangelist is recognized the world over as the apostle of love and light, the bringer of comfort to the grief-stricken, courage to the weak, help to the helpless, and strength to the falling.

St John The Evangelist, who is styled in the gospel, The beloved disciple of Christ," and is called by the Greeks "The Divine," was a Galilean, the son of Zebedee and Salome, and younger brother of St. James the Great, with whom he was brought up to the trade of fishing.
John speaks of himself, he saith that he was "The disciple whom Jesus loved"; and frequently he mentions himself by this only characteristic; which he did not out of pride to distinguish himself, but out of gratitude and tender love for his blessed Master.
John, directed by the instinct of love, knew him and gave notice to Peter: they all dined with him on the shore; and when dinner was ended, Christ walked along the shore questioning Peter about the sincerity of his love, gave him the charge of his church, and foretold his martyrdom.

 Topsail, Conception Bay South: St. John the Evangelist Church
Local historians think St. John the Evangelist Church, located in the Anglican cemetery in Topsail, was designed by James Harvey and built by S. Churchill, A. Churchill and W. Allen in 1860-1861.
Over the years the congregation of St. John the Evangelist have included influential public figures such as James Bancroft, founder of the Newfoundland Teachers Association.
Although the church was closed as a place of regular worship in 1974, St. John the Evangelist Church continues to be used for annual flower services in memory of the departed.
