The more seaward Lower St. Jones River Reserve is about 1518 ha (3750 ac) in designated size, distributed along 8.8 km (5.5 mi) of medium-salinity tidal river situated at the lower end of the St. Jones River watershed, with the river discharging into mid-Delaware Bay.
The Lower St. Jones River Reserve is home to the new DNERR education/research facility (containing a small but well equipped laboratory for DNERR researchers) which opened in May of 1999.

The St. Jones River component features tidal brackish-water and salt marshes dominated by saltmarsh cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora), salt hay (Spartina patens) and open water of creek, river and bay areas, buffered by freshwater wooded fringe, farmlands and meadows.
The St. Jones River watershed drains a portion of the coastal plain in central Kent County, Delaware, including the city of Dover, the surrounding suburbs, industrial areas, agricultural areas and Dover Air Force Base.
The upper St. Jones is impounded by a dam 10.5 miles upstream from the bay to form Silver Lake, a municipal recreation area.

By resolution of the Levy Court, Kent County owns a narrow riparian six-acre parcel of hardwood forest along a 1,500 shoreline of the St. Jones River immediately downstream of the Puncheon Run SR I bridge connector for preservation of the St. Jones River Greenway Corridor.
The cost of the event were provided by the Kent County Levy Court, The St. Jones National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the Delaware Solid Waste Authority through the Community Clean-Up Initiative Program funds authorized by Representative Donna Stone and Gerald Buckworth.
Accomplishments of the Community Services Department for the St. Jones Greenway Commission include completion of the Lebanon Landing Recreation Area and phase I of the Isaac Segment Bicycle/Pedestrian Pathway of the St. Jones Greenway.

Meanwhile, on the Hudson River, USGS scientists there have been tracking a different kind of salt problem - a slowly creeping salt front which is threatening water supplies in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., a city of about 30,000 located 75 miles north of New York City.
Teams of USGS scientists monitor river water constantly at a gaging station and crews from the city of Philadelphia gather their own data at least once a day.
Even if the river is salty only temporarily, it could take one to two years for the salt to show up in public water supplies drawn from the aquifer.
