 Magi's Singing: St. Keverne's Feast?
Keverne lived on the Lizard peninsula and felt that he didn't get enough respect from the local people and so declared that 'no metal will run within the sound of St. Keverne's bells.' To this day tin has never been found in that area.
Keverne and St. Kieran were the same person...
As early as 1236 records show that the Feast of St. Keverne was held on the nearest Sunday to the 18th November, a celebration releasing villagers from their daily drudgery.

The parish of St Keverne on the eastern side of the Lizard lies within an ancient area known as the "Meneage".
In the St Keverne Churchyard there is a mass grave which holds most of the 106 people drowned when the SS Mohegan steamed into the Manacle Rocks in 1898 and this is only one of the many graves to those who met a similar fate.

Mary Coplin was born in St Keverne, Cornwall in 1803, the first-born daughter of Henry Coplin and Mary (nee Rule).
William's occupation is given as farm labourer in the 1841 Census [2] and in the immigration records (1853) [1].
It is of interest that John, Robert and Francis Smith, sons of John and Elizabeth Smith of Trelanvean, St Keverne, Cornwall were claimed as uncles already in the colony by William and Henry Thomas when they arrived in NSW aboard the Harbinger on 12 February 1849 [1].

Most churches in Devon and Cornwall will have some tales to tell, but if you have not done this sort of thing before, probably the best place to start would be St. Keyerne Church, which more or less overlooks the infamous Manacles reef.
What we do know however, just by looking around the graveyard at St. Keverne's is that many hundreds of people have been drowned on those treacherous rocks.
I suppose the Mohegan is the best known shipwreck and for such a large loss of life the headstone, in the form of a granite Cornish cross, is quite unspectacular.
