Paul's had appropriated to the uses of the hospital the church of St. Mary Aldermanbury, (Footnote 3) of which they were patrons, they were to have the nomination of the warden and two of the priests, the appointment of the other two resting with Elsing and his assigns.
On some land belonging to him in the parishes of St. Alphage and St. Mary (Footnote 1) he established, in 1331, a hospital that was intended to accommodate 100 persons of both sexes, but appears to have started with thirty-two inmates.
The warden was also to swear fealty to the dean and chapter and pay the pension of a mark due of old from the church of St. Mary Aldermanbury, and a second pension of half a mark in sign of the subjection of the hospital.

The roots of St Thomas' Hospital lie in an infirmary established by the Augustinian priory of St Mary Overie just south of London Bridge in 1106.
In 1860 St Thomas' Hospital moved to make way for the building of London Bridge Railway Station, and it was at the new hospital, established in Lambeth, that Florence Nightingale founded the first professional school of nursing.
In 1768 Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals formalised their joint arrangements for teaching medical students as 'The United Hospitals of the Borough', but they split apart again in 1825.

This was the lasts V2 to strike Bermondsey and exploded behind Gomm Road by the nurses home of St Olaves Hospital.It was the 5th of 5 V wepaons to strike this small area of Rotherhithe.
This acutally fell on the forecourt of St Olaves Hospital which again suffered bad damaged and had to be evacuated.
There was severe damage to Rotherhithe Great Hall (Town Hall) a church and St Olaves Hospital which suffered damage to a third of its buildings.

St Thomas' Hospital was founded in 1106 probably as part of the Priory of St Mary Overie.
It took its name, the Hospital of St Thomas the Martyr from Becket after his canonisation in 1173.
In 1540 Henry VIII dissolved the Priory and Edward VI granted the buildings to the Lord Mayor and Citizens of London.

The famous design based on a set of airy pavilions running along the riverbank was interrupted by bombing during the second world war, so the hospital is architecturally as mixed as Guy’s, a mile or so downstream.
It was rededicated to St Thomas the martyr after the canonisation of Thomas a Becket in 1173.
