The Jesuit mission of Sainte Marie du Sault was founded on the river in 1668 but was abandoned in 1698 because of the IROQUOIS WARS, as was the first of 2 French fur-trade posts, which was established in 1689.

 St. Marys River Watershed Assessment
The St. Mary's River Watershed was identified as warranting further investigation during a 1997 US Army Corps of Engineer (Corps) reconnaissance study of the Lower Potomac River.
This study found that, over the next 20 years, the St. Mary's River watershed was likely to experience a rapid increase in population and that this population growth would be concentrated in the upper portions of the watershed.
Mary's County occupies a peninsula of land in southern Maryland along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay between the Potomac and Patuxent Rivers.

A hike through St. Marys gorge yields both a natural feast for the eyes and a reminder of the days when the area was heavily mined for manganese.
Marys River was adversely affected by heavy mining through World War I. The stream slowly recovered and scientific investigations began in 1936 with groundbreaking chemical and aquatic macroinvertebrate (bug) work done by Eugene Surber.
Marys River was also used as “proving grounds” for a DDT experiment conducted by the federal government in the 1940’s.

The river is never too far away from the FSR if you don't have a 4 by 4.
I fished the Mary's last august and there is hardly anything at that water level that would be very treacherous as long as you are careful.
Most of these rivers are parallelled by FSR roads and a little exploring can produce nice fishing, although I would say not quite as good as the St Mary's.
