Topic: Stabiae

Stabiae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stabiae was an ancient Roman town, located close to the modern town of Castellammare di Stabia approximately 4.5 km southeast of Pompeii, on a 50 m high headland overlooking the Bay of Naples
Pliny died at Stabiae the following day, probably during the arrival of sixth and largest pyroclastic surge of the eruption caused by the collapse of the eruption plume
The very dilute outer edge of this surge was the only one to reach Stabiae and left two centimetres of ash on top of the tephra fall deposits.

Stabiae is the ancient name for Castellammare di Stabia, a charming town about 5 km from Pompeii on the road leading to Sorrento.
We do not yet know the whereabouts of the settlement which used the necropolis of Madonna delle Grazie, but it must have been close by and may well have been on the northernmost tip of the Varano headland, a prime vantage point for controlling comings and goings both by sea and by road.
This rural idyll was brusquely terminated by the eruption of Vesuvius on August 24th 79 AD which buried Stabiae and the neighbouring towns.

Stabiae has been neglected over the years because of its more famous neighbour Pompeii and because, frankly, there wasn't much to see there.
Stabiae was in fact much naughtier than supposedly raunchy Pompeii and things went on there that have would have made a Roman patron - never mind matron - blush.
"This discovery was made possible by the unstinting and unclouded sponsorship between SAP and Restoring Ancient Stabiae, a relationship cited by the State Department as the best example of cultural heritage collaboration between Italy and the United States," said RAS Vice President Andrew Bell of the University of Maryland.
