Vision Graphics: Elements: Staccato Imaging Technology
Staccato dots are clustered into orderly patterns to eliminate low-frequency noise and inconsistencies that lead to visibly grainy patterns.
Staccato prints on more materials, using thinner ink films, making it ideal for printing onto a wide range of substrates including fine paper, uncoated stock, recycled paper, newsprint, plastics and metals.
Staccato is applied and calibrated in prepress in the same manner as other halftone screens, offering simplicity for workflow integration.

Dome Printing Stochastic or FM Screening Process
Staccato is the new standard for stochastic printing, and the only brand used by Dome.
Staccato takes the stochastic process one step further by optimizing the dot shape and size to give the best results.
The Staccato technology handles the complex algorithms that place the dots "randomly", while Dome's electronic image processors and image setters capture the image and transfer it to the plate.

 Vision Graphics — Creo Staccato
Staccato screening brings tonal and color stability to the pressroom by reducing variations in dot gain caused by changes in solid ink density, wet trap, and color contamination from paper.
Staccato screens absorb light more efficiently and produce midtone vibrancy and gamut that is not possible with AM screens.
Staccato screens overcome the problems with graininess and visible artifacts in flat tint areas that are commonly associated with traditional stochastic/FM screens.

 Staccato Scientific Objectives and Innovation
STACCATO will study three processes, representing a time sequence leading to mixing: filamentation of tracer structures by chaotic advection, diabatic decay of filaments due to radiative processes, and filament-destruction by turbulence.
An important task to reduce uncertainties in current estimates of STE is thus to intercompare methods and models used to calculate STE, to find the strengths and weaknesses of each approach and to identify the reasons for discrepancies.
Therefore, another focal point of STACCATO is to study the variability and possible trends of STE during the past few decades and to investigate STE under scenarios of climate change in future times.

Returning to the idea of staccato meaning space before AND after a note, remember that in breath staccato this space is made with a slight stoppage of the air flow.
Stopped staccato is a very powerful tool for ensemble playing, as it gives the player precision control over when every note starts and stops.
Breath staccato is very dependent on the reed, and is quite difficult to do the same way every time.

There are styles where playing staccato is predominant in the music, but for blues and most rock etc you're gonna want a more legato (flowing) feel.
Maybe you're muting too much, your attack is a little too sharp or you remove your fingers very slightly from the frets after a note sounds and before the next is played (for legato they should kinda 'melt' from one to the other).
Also, IMO there is nothing wrong with playing staccato as long as its under your own control.

 Violin/Fiddle: Staccato Technique
There are many ways to play a staccato note...stopping the bow or lifting the bow can be performed to ensure a good staccato...both would offer their very own character of tone....there are also slurred staccato notes..
It is not always clear, however, that the use of the term 'non-legato' implies something different from staccato marks; in late Beethoven, for instance, the use of the term 'non-legato' or staccato marks, often occurring after legato passages, may both merely be intended as indications not to slur.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries a wide variety of signs came to be used to signify various nuances of staccato articulation involving numerous combinations of dots, vertical and horizontal dashes, vertical and horizontal wedges etc., in the music of such composers as Debussy and Schoenberg.

So I'm reconsidering my idea of having a notation that will clearly say "this one is primarily a bowing indication (and probably an editor's)." Come to think of it, we already have such a notation: the up- and down-bow marks.
Now to consider using those dots to indicate (something that sounds like) spiccato, and wedges for (something that sounds like) on-the-string staccato...
I suppose the guessing-game of "what could he have meant here?" is part of the charm of our imprecise notations.
