The crowd of more than 200 people was split between stack opponents, who fear water and radiation pollution from the stack, and supporters many of whom rely on the U.S. Agri-Chemicals mine for a living.
Barnett, a retired state air pollution investigator, claimed the new stack could pollute the underground aquifer and release large concentrations of wind-blown radon and fluoride gas into the city, only 1 1/2 miles away.
Among the conditions placed for approval were closing the old stack as soon as possible, lining the bottom of the new stack with a thick plastic liner and limiting it's height to 158 feet.

Six miles of former Rock Island right-of-way, at one time abandoned and removed, are being rebuilt to provide competitive rail service for the Mid-America Energy power plant south of Council Bluffs.
A classic red brick structure located at the crossing of the former Cotton Belt and Rock Island railroads, it is the last surviving example of a junction-type station in the state.
The general manager at the Illinois Railway Museum wants RITS members to know that Rock Island Autobox RI 264070 has been donated to the museum but must be moved from Rockford to Union, Illinois, a distance of about 50 miles.

The layers of rock were laid down by rivers that flowed on an ancient continent south situated of the Equator, on a hot plain crossed by braided river systems, and represent sediments deposited in river channels and on flood plains.

 Rock Island Lines Historical Overview
As the Rock Island approached its centennial year of 1952, it was a strong railroad, and one of the best in the country.
The Rock Island entered its third and final bankruptcy in 1975, and despite the best efforts of management and trustee, and the flashy new blue and white "Rock" image, the company could not survive.
In early 1980, the bankruptcy court determined that the Rock Island could not be successfully reorganized and ordered the liquidation of the railroad, the largest such liquidation in U.S. history.

He supposedly has recorded a "rock" album with Michael Manring on bass (I don't know who else is on it), but it has yet to be released.
This amazing space rock band from Finland has captured the attention of fans of the genre around the world, and even those who usually aren't that interested in it.
Their music is described by the band's website as "folk, hypnotic, improvisation, progressive, psykedelia, space rock, herbs, spiritual, trance." Loaded words to be sure, but their music is equally loaded with texture and color that leaves most space rock groups sounding more like a sample machine stuck in loop mode.

To his great credit he saw that there was a hole in the fabric of the local rock scene right where the blues should be, and he had definite ideas about where he wanted to take his next band.
He took those ideas along with a stack of Chess Record albums with him to Mark Sandman's house one day, and the eventual result was Treat Her Right, one of the most unique and popular bands in Boston from their mid-80's inception through to their amicable break-up in the early 90's.
It is my opinion that the influence of their eponymous first LP was also a major force in establishing Fort Apache as the studio of choice for the local bands, a position the studio would hold onto for most of the following decade.

Stack Rock Fort, about 800 yards off the west Wales coast near Milford Haven, is for sale for £150,000.
The 19th Century fort - complete with a couple of cannons - dates back from the time of Napoleon, when it was initially built as a defence for the river Haven.
But it has nowhere to sleep at present, and the new owner will have to sort out sewage, water and power.

No doubt he did, but he would certainly have first sent his shiploads of soldiers to make their slow way down the river to assemble in an anchorage to await 'such favourable weather as would further his activities' and, if the wait was long, to put the troops ashore.
Behind again were the timber stacks and saw pits and along the inside of the dockyard wall were the beginnings of the elegant terrace of houses for senior officers with the Dockyard Chapel at the end.
Although some of the forts were much modified in later years and all are now derelict or put to other uses, they can still be seen as fine examples of their kind.

Life's too short to spend all my time looking for the Rock of Ages in the firehose flood of new music that comes out each week--and besides, sometimes nothing hits the sweet spot better than a well-done bit of musical novelty.
The record seems like an odd order at first, as it alternates generally jaunty electro-pop and new-tech-soul vocal workouts with hypnotic instrumentals that seem to tread in the margins of sonic territories ruled by folks like Four Tet, Caribou, and Marz.
Whenever I hear that the Fort Knox Five--a Washington D.C. production team with ties to the Thievery Corporation--have pressed something new to wax, I get that twitchy "gotta gotta hear it" thing goin' on, 'cos they never, ever turn out a weak beat.

Stepping out of the tram at the top of Mont Fort, Verbier’s highest summit, you feel as though you stand at the geographical center of skiing in the Alps.
That same week, while much of Verbier’s upper mountains were buried, we drove up to Super St. Bernard (again, same lift pass), and spent a glorious day ski touring this resorts endless, high alpine terrain.
If I was ever to open a bar myself, I would model it on this après ski legend, and more specifically, the hard core patrons who stack their fat skis outside, and tell priceless narratives of their exploits on the mountain over endless pints and shots.
