Even the one remaining major league tenant of the stadium, Major League Soccer, is intent on moving to a new facility, either in the District or in suburban Maryland or Virginia.
Beyond stadium concerts, there is a limited, erratic demand for the use of RFK Stadium as a non-music special-event facility.
The DC Armory has the potential to generate positive (though not substantial) revenue, but this revenue is unlikely to be generated without a significant and sustained capital investment plan for the facility.

Originally called "D.C. Stadium," this was the first of the boring doughnut-shaped "cloned" dual-use stadiums that spread like crabgrass during the 1960s and 1970s.
RFK is the smallest stadium of this genre, which gives it a somewhat cozier feeling that greatly accentuated the noise level of Redskins games during their heyday in the 1970s and 1980s.
One of the aesthetic drawbacks of RFK stadium is that the lights were attached to the roof in a haphazard fashion, not in sync with the curved roofline.

RFK Stadium will always draw the ire of many ballpark enthusiasts because of its history as the first multi-purpose, concrete donut stadium built in what came to be known as the cookie cutter era.
The way the stadium was built leads me to believe that it was designed as a baseball-first facility, since the nature of the curves in the concrete were grooved in a manner that catered to creating better seating options for a baseball game.
RFK Stadium is primarily remembered today for the football games it hosted as the longtime home of the Washington Redskins, who left for the Maryland suburbs after their 1996 season.

The stadium's plumbing, wiring and lead-based paint are unsafe and would have to be replaced if renovation of Victory Stadium is the option chosen.
As to the N&W deed's provisions, its condition is that the land must be used for "stadium, armory, park and recreational purposes only." Future use of the site as soccer fields is consistent with that language.
I can hardly wait to attend the first event in the new stadium, to see how pleased our young ballplayers, their coaches and parents, and all Roanokers will be with their new sports and entertainment facility.

As I left the stadium, I overheard a man telling his friend that every morning now, his son wakes up and asks, "How did our team do last night?" The father told his friend that nothing has made him prouder as a father.
The ball was the same one Grzenda used to throw the last pitch at RFK Stadium on Sept. 30, 1971 at the last game of the Washington Senators before the team moved to Arlington, Texas.

We were running a little late, so after the short hike to the main gate of RFK from the Metro stop where the bus disembarks, we got into the line at the main gate right around 7:00 pm (first pitch was scheduled for 7:05).
As Linc and I were walking back to the bus stop, across the large median in front of the Armory dividing the east and west bound lanes of East Capitol, I bumped into a guy motoring in the same direction as us who was on crutches.

The stadium is on the Metro -- the Stadium/Armory stop on the blue or orange lines.
On the inside, I don't think there are any bad seats, it's a good stadium to see a game (just much much larger than Spartan).
RFK is a huge stadium and it is never full (if you didn't kniw it was designed for football) so you shouldn't have trouble finding a seat.
