Washington was selected as the home for the Expos over other cities primarily because of RFK Stadium, which underwent $18.5 million in renovations over four months to bring it back to baseball’s standards after a decade of hosting soccer and music concerts.
RFK Stadium will always draw the ire of many ballpark enthusiasts because of its history as the first multi-purpose, concrete donut stadium built in what came to be known as the cookie cutter era.
RFK Stadium is primarily remembered today for the football games it hosted as the longtime home of the Washington Redskins, who left for the Maryland suburbs after their 1996 season.

Tuesday, April 11, 2006; 3:24 PM Metro offered some anxious baseball fans a speedier ride to RFK Stadium today for the season opener.
Metro only has two tracks, and trains go one at time, so trains have to be spaced far enough apart for an express system to work.
The service was a help for some, who were excited to get there in time for Vice President Cheney's opening pitch, and a confusion for many, who weren't sure when the express train was coming or what it was.

An act of Congress in 1957 authorized a new stadium to be built, and groundbreaking finally occurred on July 8, 1960.
The Nationals say that the stadium has five levels or "tiers" of seats, although the 500 level is really just the area above the walkway running through the upper deck, separating it from the 400-level seats, and the 100, 200 and 300 seats are all on the lower level.
RFK Stadium, with all of its 44-year-old faults, is an enormous step forward for this franchise and, frankly, for Major League Baseball.

Unfortunately, someone at the Washington Post was lazy in the late 1990s and started applying the same name to an interchange just down the road instead of coming up with something more descriptive such as "Malfunction Junction" or the like, and unfortunately other local media outlets seized on it.
It was actually the Washington TIMES not the Post that first called the Springfield mess the mixing bowl (1990) - not the post.

RFK opened to host the Washington Senators, a major league team that moved to Texas after the 1971 season, and the Washington Redskins, an NFL team that moved into a new stadium in Landover, Md., a few miles outside the District, in 1997.
Vendors still line the street between the Metro exit and the stadium, upperdeck seats are still painted Redskins red and yellow, and entire sections still sway up and down during rallies like a bridge during an earthquake.

RFK Stadium was given up for dead several years ago when the Washington Redskins flew to the suburbs, and only the lack of a game plan for the area saved the stadium from the wrecking ball.
