Arena rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arena rock is a loosely defined style of rock music, often also called stadium rock or opera rock.
While many groups toured in massive venues, the term "arena rock" is usually used to refer to 1970s hard rock groups that occupied a middle ground between the heavy metal sound and the softer adult oriented sounds of country rock and the singer-songwriters of the decade.
However, "arena rock" retains much of its pejorative meaning, as some popular "alternative" groups of the 1990s such as Stone Temple Pilots were tagged with this label by dismissive critics.

St. James Encyclopedia of Pop Culture: Stadium Concerts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Rock music--with its mass participation and the sheer volume that was necessary to reach so many people at once--was particularly suited to playing concerts at football stadiums and in sports arenas.
Rock musicians looked to the stadium as a way to play in front of the most people, for the most money, as audiences broadened during the seventies.
Stadiums with a 20,000-seat capacity, which were considered to be the big prizes in the 1970s, had became second-tier venues when superstar groups were on the road.

Stadiums' revenue forecasts miss point, Broyles aide says
Hill said she can't fathom why a state-owned, state-run facility like War Memorial Stadium must compete with a self-supporting collegiate stadium that receives no taxpayer dollars from its own university, the Legislature or the turnback option that War Memorial has.
In Hill's mind it's pointless to compare a plan for the Little Rock stadium that's still in its infancy and might not materialize with the construction that's going on right outside Broyles' window.
A steady growth from $27.3 million in budgeted expenses for 2000 to $35.2 million in 2005 won't be enough to propel the Razorbacks into Broyles' vision for national competitiveness, nor will it finance the growing needs of UA men's and women's athletics, she said.

Music To Score By - Why does stadium rock all sound the same? By Rob Walker
Turns out that the folks who make decisions about stadium music are less interested in crafting a unique, venue-specific soundscape than in giving the people what they want—and they are not too proud to steal.
Then again, that tune's rise to stadium ubiquity proves that a little originality can be duplicated so quickly and so thoroughly, that it soon just blends in with all the other interchangeable music and sounds like the same old song.
Not only is organ music soothing and inoffensive-- indeed more inoffensive than stadium rock, which is loud and intrusive and makes it difficult to converse during time outs-- but organ music was actually much more individualized.

The history of rock can be viewed as a kind of cultural interplay between the US and the UK, with fantastic bands from both sides of the pond influencing and interacting with one another, often with an impact far outreaching their sales.

Their grand entrance -- coupled with one of the most famous songs in rock history -- set the tone for a night of greatest hits and a few new songs.
Halfway through the show a bridge extended from the stage to a smaller platform in the center of Giants Stadium, symbolic of the tour's title, "Bridges to Babylon." The Stones played a few obscure songs from the platform, but despite the gimmick, this was the weakest part of show, eliciting minimal energy from the audience.
The Stones may no longer create music as vital to the rock scene as albums like "Exile on Main Street" and "Beggars Banquet" once were, but that doesn't matter when you see them perform live.
