STAFFORD HENRY NORTHCOTE IDDESLEIGH, 1ST Earl Of (1818-1887), British statesman, was born in London, on the 27th of October 1818.
He was succeeded as 2nd earl by his eldest son, Walter Stafford Northcote (1845-), who for some years was his father's private secretary.
Lord Northcote was appointed governor-general of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1903, and held this post till 1908.

Stafford Henry Northcote, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh GCB PC (1818–1887), British statesman, was born in London on 27 October 1818.
He entered Parliament in 1855 as Conservative Member of Parliament for Dudley, and was elected for Stamford in 1858, a seat which he exchanged in 1866 for Devon North.
His second son, Henry, 1st Baron Northcote, was Governor-General of Australia 1904–1908.

NORTHCOTE, Sir HENRY STAFFORD, Baron Northcote of Exeter (1846-1911), governor-general, was born on 18 November 1846 at Marylebone, London, second son of Sir Stafford Henry Northcote, later 1st earl of Iddesleigh, and his wife Cecilia Frances, née Farrer.
Northcote was private secretary to Lord Salisbury in 1876 and in 1877-80 to his father.
In July 1903 Northcote was appointed governor-general of Australia to succeed Lord Tennyson.

The north-west window in the same aisle is in memory of Stafford Henry, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh, and is a tribute of affectionate respect from the parishioners of Upton Pyne and many friends in Exeter and Devon, born October 27th 1818, died January 12th 1887.

The state seat of Northcote is held by Fiona Richardson, member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and the federal seat of Batman, which covers Northcote, is held by Martin Ferguson, also from the ALP.
Northcote was at one point the home of Australian death metal band Blood Duster, who (probably uniquely) named a song after the suburb, as well as including it in the title of their second album, Str8 Outta Northcote.

Stafford Henry Northcote (1818-1887), 1st Earl of Iddesleigh, statesman, was born in London, the eldest son of Henry Stafford Northcote (1792-1851), a younger son of the Northcote family of Upton Pyne, near Exeter, Devon, baronets.
In 1853, he served on a commission for reforming the Board of Trade and drew up a report on the permanent civil service, recommending that a system of examination should be employed to limit entry.
In addition there are pamphlets, addresses, typed copies of letters to Northcote, cartoons from magazines, newspaper cuttings, appreciations of Northcote, verses by Northcote, notes for Lord Iddesleigh's biography by T.H. Farrer, anecdotes and other miscellanea.

The carved wooden reredos was presented to the church by the first Countess of Iddesleigh in 1887 as a memorial to her husband Sir Stafford Henry Northcote, created Earl of Iddesleigh in 1885.
The Pyne family had been lords of the manor since the reign of Henry I. The smaller canopied tomb is of Humphrey Larder, grandson of Edmund.
Among the list of rectors may be noted five members of the Northcote family, and the name of the Revd John Walker (rector 1714-20) formerly rector of St. Mary Major in Exeter, and a canon of Exeter Cathedral.
