The rail industry is viewed as an important economic indicator for US industry generally, but the growth also reflects increasing congestion on the roads and a nationwide shortage of truck drivers.
Rail safety inspectors from the Railway Inspectorate have ordered Metronet to improve track on the District Line, and speeds have been restricted on some parts of the system because the track was not stretched, or stressed, correctly after being laid, with the result that the track could buckle in hot weather and result in derailment.
