  Actors, producers and directors
Actors and directors working on movies or television programs—especially those who shoot on location—may work in the early morning or late evening hours to film night scenes or tape scenes inside public facilities outside of normal business hours.
Employment of actors, producers, and directors is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014.
Many stage directors belong to the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers (SSDC), and film and television directors belong to the Directors Guild of America.

OperaWorld.com's Opera Insights: The Role of the Stage Director   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The stagings of the first operas in Italy, from the late 1500s to about 1670, are generally thought to have enjoyed a well-integrated approach to all of the art forms that came to bear on their production: stage design, costumes, acting, singing, dancing, and speaking.
The stage director has come to represent one of the most powerful artistic creators in the staging of opera, and the success of an opera relies not just on good singing but on the world that is created by the stage director.
The most widespread production model, one in which a stage director is expected to leave his or her imprint on the interpretation of work in the standard repertoire, will continue well into the 21st century, mainly because someone needs to take charge of the situation—the creative artists are usually dead.

A Case for the Stage Director's Copyright (Edward Einhorn v. Mergatroyd)
The question of whether a director can copyright his or her work is one that is still to be decided by the courts.
The director's copyright issue is primarily a producer-director question, covering instances where a director (such as myself) is not compensated for his or her intellectual property contribution by the producer.
I am sure that if directors had established copyrights and playwrights did not, that many directors would be just as fearful of the prospect of a playwright gaining ownership of his or her work.

Classic Films: The Director   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
True, the stage director creates certain patterns of movement, appropriate gestures for his actors, and spatial relationships, but all of these visual elements take second place to the language of the script, which is created by the playwright.
The theatrical director’s relation to the text is similar to the stage actor’s relation to a role: he can add much to what’s written down, but what he contributes is usually secondary to the text itself-an improvisation, as it were, which is circumscribed by the limits set down by the author.
Since the stage director’s mise-en-scene is confined to the unit of the scene, a certain amount of compromise is inevitable.

Emily Wells - New York Director & Stage Manager   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
I joke around and say that the stage manager is sort of the secretary of the theater world, because from the time you’re a production assistant you’re making the coffee.
You have to take blocking notes to remind the actors, and you also have to listen to what the director needs technically so you can convey that to the design team so they know what to expect and there are no big surprises at the last minute.
As a SM I’ve worked with directors who are so rigid in what they want that they leave no room for personal expression or personalities, there’s no room for people to grow.

Call the cast on stage and when necessary explain the set to them (this is necessary because in the scenic construction schedule many important scenic units and items are not ready until the technical rehearsal and thus may be new to the actors).
Post the director's pre-determined schedule for the actors and distribute to concerned technical departments no later than the beginning of the performance or rehearsal call when same is to be held.
The Stage Manager should remain throughout the entire strike and attempt to see that the strike plan is followed, questions are referred to the technical director, people are kept busy, and work progresses without problems.
