Magic (illusion) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The magician snaps his fingers and a coin disappears; places a dove in a cage, claps his hands and the bird vanishes, including the cage, stuffs a silk into his fist and opens his hands revealing nothing, or waves a magic wand and the Statue of Liberty magically "goes away".
The magician "puts his assistant into a trance" and then floats her up and into the air, passing a ring around her body to show that there are 'no wires' supporting her.
Stage magic tends to revolve around large props that are almost always gimmicked, in that some kind of secret mechanism is involved.

The History of the Magician Card
Although the two visions of the magician can mix and interact in fascinating ways, it is accurate to say that in modern decks we usually see the magus; in the historic decks we usually see the stage magician.
The lemniscate over the Magician's head in modern decks is a consequence of French occultist Elpiphas Levi's musings on the shape of the Magician's hat in the old decks.
The Magician in the historic decks is connected with another archetype as well; that of the craftsman or artisan, as we see in the Tarocchi del Mantegna prints.

I like magic that is direct and simple to understand, but gets a strong audience reaction, and is suitable for all the family.
The act requires little time to set up, no special lighting or stage facilities and can be performed almost anywhere.
The act usually lasts for between 10 and 15 minutes and is really suited to a performance in a variety show or as supporting act to another full evening cabaret (most of the shows I do are close-up or childrens shows so I have not had the need to develop a longer stage show).

However, our stage magician wasn't your run-of-the-mill prestidigitator: he had, in the tradition established by Houdini, long since decided to become a defender of "rationality" against the irrational fringe and creepy-crawlies in general.
Another feather was the University of Washington affair in which stooges planted by our conjurer in the guise of experimental subjects faked results and led a whole research department on a wild goose chase for over a year before he--to the delight of those willing to sacrifice intellectual honesty for delight--triumphantly proclaimed his trickery.
But the magician and his associates might as well have reduced those years of research to a puff of smoke.
