The group was founded in 1980 by the current chairman, Brian Souter, his sister, Ann Gloag, and her now ex-husband Robin Gloag.
Stagecoach was born of deregulation in the British express coach market in the early 1980s, though its roots can be traced back to 1976 when Ann Gloag and her husband Robin set up a small motor caravan and minibus hire business called Gloagtrotter.
A Stagecoach London vehicle, operating London Buses route 30, was destroyed in the 7 July 2005 London bombings and a second was targeted 21 July 2005 London bombings, operating London Buses route 26.

A stagecoach is a type of four-wheeled enclosed passenger and/or mail coach, strongly sprung and drawn by four horses, widely used before the introduction of railway transport.
Familiar images of the stagecoach are that of a Royal Mail coach passing through a turnpike gate, a Dickensian passenger coach covered in snow pulling up at a coaching inn, a highwayman demanding a coach to "stand and deliver", and a coach being chased by Red Indians in a Western movie.
The stagecoach, with seats outside and in, was a public conveyance which was known in England from the 16th century.

Stagecoach South Midlands was the name given to Stagecoach Group bus operations in the counties of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire, England until March 2004.
Then from 1st March 2004 Stagecoach in Oxfordshire and Stagecoach in Warwickshire were split to become two entirely separate divisions of Stagecoach Group.
Stagecoach South Midlands was created from Midland Red (South) Ltd and Thames Transit Ltd, both companies acquired by the Stagecoach Group.

Stagecoach Group PLC said Wednesday it was in "advanced discussions" to sell Pittsburgh's dominant taxi cab and ground transportation company.
Steven Stewart, a spokesman for Stagecoach Group, of Perth, Scotland, declined to disclose the potential buyers of Pittsburgh Transportation Group, which is owned by the company's Coach USA unit.
Stagecoach Group also wrote off $903 million from the value of Coach USA, which is the largest bus charter service and the second-largest bus company in the United States.

For the six months to Oct 31 2005 the group made a profit before tax, intangible asset amortisation and exceptional items under new IFRS accounting rules of 72.1 mln stg compared to analyst forecasts of 65-76 mln stg, with a consensus of 69 mln stg, and a restated 70.6 mln stg last year.
Stagecoach as incumbent operator is bidding for the new South West Trains franchise which runs from February 2007, as well as the Thameslink/Great Northern and Greater Western franchises -- the winner of the latter two franchises is expected to be announced by the Department for Transport before Christmas.
