THUNDER SEVEN, a CD-only release was a disjointed collection, while the live album that followed suffered from a wooden sound and flat production.
Interest built slowly, but the band finally made a breakthrough with PROGRESSIONS OF POWER, their fourth album, released in 1980.
Again like Rush, their concerts were renowned for their sophisticated special effects rather than the actual music, and featured every conceivable pyrotechnic device available, plus the ultimate in computerised, laser-lighting rigs.

 NationMaster.com - Encyclopedia: Triumph (band)
Stages is a live album by Canadian rock band Triumph, released in 1985 (see 1985 in music).
Triumph's first album (originally self-titled but later renamed In the Beginning) was extremely rare outside Canada, but their widely released second LP, Rock and Roll Machine, received some scattered airplay with Gil Moore's cover of Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way".
Being a power trio, Triumph were often compared to Rush, but at the start, their own brand of heavy rock remained structured and traditional, eschewing concept albums and instrumental improvisation.

Willie Nelson : Red Headed Stranger - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
It's undoubtedly distinctive -- and it sounds more distinctive with each passing year -- but it's strictly an intellectual triumph and, after a pair of albums that were musically and intellectually sound, it's a bit of a letdown, no matter how successful it was.
For all its success, it still remains a prickly, difficult album, though, making the interspersed concept of Phases and Stages sound shiny in comparison.
Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger perhaps is the strangest blockbuster country produced, a concept album about a preacher on the run after murdering his departed wife and her new lover, told entirely with brief song-poems and utterly minimal backing.

Triumph - Free Music Downloads, Videos, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
Such further albums as 1984's Thunder Seven, 1985's Stages, 1985's The Sport of Kings, and 1987's Surveillance failed to meet the expectations set by their earlier releases, yet the group was able to retain its following.
In the wake of their breakup, several archival releases popped up in record stores, such as 1995's In the Beginning and 1996's King Biscuit Flower Hour (the latter of which chronicled a 1981 concert), while Rik Emmett continued on with his solo career, issuing albums on a regular basis throughout the '90s.
Such resulting albums as 1979's Just a Game and 1980's Progressions of Power inched the group closer to breakthrough success, which was obtained by a pair of back-to-back gold-certified albums: 1981's Allied Forces (often considered the group's best album, which spawned the hit anthem "Fight the Good Fight") and 1982's Never Surrender.
