Multistage rocket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first stage is at the bottom and is usually the largest, the second stage above it and is usually the next largest, etc. In the typical case (linear staging), when the first stage's motor(s) fire, the entire rocket is propelled upwards.
When the first stage's motor(s) run out of fuel, the first stage is detached from the rest of the rocket (usually with some kind of small explosive charge) and falls away.
Since staging is expensive in terms of manpower, a new movement has concentrated on single stage to orbit designs that do not have separate stages.

 Norfolk and Suffolk Rocketry Association
Staging is a technique used by rocketeers to gain higher altitudes, by utilising two or more engines that fire in series, one after another.
Although this means that the first stage of a rocket will lift it far less than if equivilant motors were used on their own, the final stage will only have to lift the remaining weight of the rocket plus itself, and begins firing already at altitude and speed.
The addition of the crude second stages moved the point of engine thrust too far away from the fins, and pushed the centre of mass prortionally further away from the rear of the total new rocket length.

 Rocketry Frequently Asked Questions
Model rocketry is a very safe hobby as long as you fly by the NAR (or CAR if you live in Canada) safety code.
Series staged rockets contain motors that are stacked one on top of the other inside the rocket which are usually successively smaller the farther up the rocket they are.
The motors in the first stage are ignited at the launch pad and once the fuel burns out, that section of the rocket falls away to reveal another motor for what's left of the rocket which then ignites and then continues upwards.

Rocketry is an area where much research has been carried out and a base of knowledge has been built up.
Keeping safety as the number one consideration, the next step in your development of Rocketry understanding is to work in groups of 4 or 5 under the careful guidance of your Design and Technology teacher to build a model rocket that is of a tested and proven design.
