  STALAG 17
STALAG 17 is more of a dramatic picture, though it does have humorous moments to help break up the seriousness of the situation.
STALAG 17 may not be a classic that leaps from everyone's tongue, but it's definitely a film worth seeing.
STALAG 17 is about the men and the spy who's making their lives miserable, not a film about German/POW relations.

Stalag 17 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stalag 17 is a 1953 film which tells the story of a group of American soldiers held in a German World War II prisoner of war camp who come to believe one of their number is a traitor.
As of 1997, nothing remains of the physical camp and its location was being used as agricultural land, as it clearly had been for a long period of time.
Although the date is never stated, Stalag 17 begins on "the longest night of the year" in 1944 which would make it Friday, Dec. 22nd 1944 - the Winter Solstice that year 1.

Stalag 17 is generally considered as being straight drama while Hogan’s Heroes was a sitcom.
While Stalag 17 attempted to portray prisoners of war (POW’s) as being every much as involved in the war effort as the troops on the front lines, the producers of Hogan’s Heroes realized that was just plain silly.
In Stalag 17, the POW camp commandant was comical.

 Review: Stalag 17
Stalag 17 was so popular that not only was it a hit at the box office but it spawned the TV series knock-off Hogan's Heroes.
Stalag 17 is vintage Wilder, from its smart dialogue and top-notch acting to its engaging storyline.
Stalag 17, despite often being labeled as one of Wilder's "lesser" films, is a bona fide classic, and an example of how an accomplished director can meld many elements into a workable whole.

Amazon.co.uk: Stalag 17 [1953] (REGION 1) (NTSC): William Holden, Don Taylor, Otto Preminger, Robert Strauss, Harvey ...
Certainly Stalag 17 has been widely imitated, most familiarly in the TV sit-com "Hogan's Heroes" and to some extent on Rowan and Martin's "Laugh-In." Roberto Benigni's Life Is Beautiful, on the other hand, which also finds humor in the horrific, is of a different genre.
The story concerns American prisoners of war held in the German "Stalag 17" in 1944, and it begins grimly: after much planning, the Americans have devised an escape for two of their number, but the next morning the bullet-riddled bodies of the two men are dragged into camp and dumped in the mud.
There has been some complaint that STALAG 17 is disrespectful to WWII prisoners of war, for it paints their Nazi captors as buffoons and camp conditions as not so much horrific as merely unpleasant--and it is true that the film makes no serious portray the extreme difficulties most POWs encountered.

The Jujube Spotlight - Stalag 17
The standard characters endemic to all packs of men in the movies (be they in gangs, mental wards, or prisons) are here displayed: the leader, the goofball, the sissy, the tough, the kid, the golden boy, the all-American straight guy, and the poor crazy bastard.
The high point of "Stalag 17" is a fantastic scene which completely illustrates the absurdity of appearances.
In any case, "Stalag 17" shouldn't be remembered for its characters, its depiction of prisoners' lives (which has been done better since), or its gratifying but predictable finale of Americans trumping their Nazi enemies.

Stalag 17 American Style   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Along the Danube River in Austria about forty miles from Vienna, a prison camp called Stalag 17 was one of many prisoner of war facilities during WWII, containing wooden barracks surrounded by double fences of barbed wire and guard towers.
The 1953 Billy Wilder film "Stalag 17" is a close reproduction of the actual facilities, although the actors were obviously not as hungry, dirty, and overcrowded as the real prisoners were.
Stalag 17 type facilities are in America and just waiting for occupants, only this time it will succeed on a grand scale unless multitudes of decent people refuse to accept or condone tyranny and death, while there is still time and while we still can.

William Holden is always in the shadows in `Stalag 17', he's always behind the characters or off to the side of the camera.
That is the mastery of Billy Wilder's `Stalag 17', it takes the film's most interesting character and sets him apart from the rest for most of the film, letting us learn about him as the characters do.

"Best Screenwriting Magazine" -- LA Times
Legendary writer-director Billy Wilder brings the prisoner of war drama Stalag 17 from stage to screen, adding yet another definitive genre film to his resume while carefully juggling equal measures of comedy and drama in a venue that might seem antithetical to the former.

Co-playwight, and former Stalag inmate, Donald Bevan joins most of the surviving cast members on an informative commentary that explores the play's evolution to film, paying particular attention to Wilder's alterations to the cast as well as the methods employed to "open up" the screenplay from the stage version.

The eponymous prisoner-of-war camp somewhere on the Danube houses 600 captured American airmen, and the film paints a slice-of-life portrait of their day-to-day lives, focusing on jaded wheeler-dealer William Holden, who is suspected by his fellow prisoners of spying for the Nazi wardens.
Notable here is famed director Otto Preminger as the camp's commandant -- a turn that recalls Jean Renoir's Grand Illusion, a clear precursor to Stalag 17, in which director Erich von Stroheim starred as a WWI POW camp commandant.
