Stalemate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stalemate is a situation in chess where the player whose turn it is to move has no legal moves but is not in check.
Stalemate has also become a widely used metaphor for other situations where there is a conflict or contest between two parties, such as war or political negotiations, and neither side is able to achieve victory, resulting in what is also called a dead heat, standoff, or deadlock.
Stalemate is an important factor in the endgame - the set-up in the top-right of this diagram, for example, quite frequently occurs in play, and the position in the bottom-left is an example of a pawn being worth as much as a queen.

Stalemate is a situation in chess whereby one player has no legal moves but is not in check (that is, their king is not attacked, but all moves would place it under attack).
Stalemate is also used colloquially as a figurative term for a situation that results in a deadlock or standoff, where neither party is willing to either abandon their position or hazard direct conflict.

Stalemate is a situation in chess whereby one player has no legalmoves but is not in check.
In the forerunners to modern chess, such as shatranj, stalemate was a win for the side administering it, and this rule persisted for a while in chess, although when playing for money, a win by stalemate sometimes only won half the stake.
Stalemate is also used colloquially as a figurativeterm for a situation that results in a deadlock or standoff, where neither party is willing to either abandon their position orhazard direct conflict.

Stalemates emerge for a number of reasons: failed tactics, depletion of available resources to fuel the conflict, a reduction in support of the conflict by group members or allies, or costs becoming too high to continue.[1]
This in turn is determined in part by the parties being in a 'hurting stalemate.' While these concepts are attractive as metaphors, it is less than obvious whether they can be operationalized in a manner that enables either to be clearly determined ex ante (that is, prior to the success of a mediation).
The data analysis produced from this research shows that a mutually hurting stalemate is indeed a condition for negotiating a ceasefire and reduced violence between warring parties.

In sixteenth-century Spain stalemate was considered a half-win: if, as often happened, the game was played for a stake, the loser by stalemate paid an amount halfway between the sums agreed on in case of checkmate or a draw.
In Italy, from the fourteenth century on, stalemate was regarded as a draw, and this view gradually came to be accepted all over Europe.
Without the stalemate rule, K+R would win against K+B, though not against K+N. Because these endings are rarely played to a conclusion, we tend to look on them as “theoretical draws” and forget that stalemates are potentially present in a large number of endings.

When we add more pieces it is indeed possible to create stalemate altough it is not a big challenge then becaus we can simply surround the king with his own pieces and block those pieces with more pieces of the same color.
I think that in a real game a stalemate can not occur because the king has to be in a corner.
There are only two pawns (it is certainly impossible to create stalemate when the pawns are knights)who can be easy blocked but the two officers have to be on the bord and there are no pieces left to block them.

DP Online: Stalemates A to Y
Diplomacy players have known about stalemate lines since the earliest days of the hobby in the early 1960s; the first stalemate lines were published in fanzines in the mid 1960s.
In the 1970s the hobby became enamored of stalemate lines and many articles were written investigating which positions could, or could not, be held.
Whilst "old hands" find stalemate lines, articles on stalemate lines, and discussion of stalemate lines to be exceedingly dull and dry, novices are usually very interested by the concept of a stalemate line.

The term stalemate refers to the point at which the parties are using the maximum force possible (or the maximum that they are willing to use), yet neither side is able to prevail in the conflict.
The conflict was mediated successfully because of the efforts of the mediator to move the parties beyond stalemate by reframing the problem in a new way.
This is a theoretical article by Rubin which examines (among other things) how stalemates produce "ripeness"--the situation in which a conflict is ready to be settled through negotiation.

ASMARA, July 19 (Reuters) - Eritrea’s president has said continuing deadlock with former foe Ethiopia over their disputed border is becoming "very dangerous", and Asmara will not now engage with a U.N. envoy appointed to resolve the stalemate.
Eritrea has regularly called on the outside world to press its bigger Horn of Africa neighbour, a U.S. ally in the war on terror, into accepting a ruling by independent experts in 2002 about where their common border should lie.
Isayas said the international community had contributed to the current stalemate by its weakness and there was now no question of Eritrea dealing with the U.N. envoy appointed seven months ago.

This aspect is very key to the strategy for this game: time is essentially on good's side (they want evil to "pass them up" except in the rare case of the four-baddies-in-the-shire victory), so using the flying nazgul to go backwards is usually pretty important for evil.
But I want to run with this, because I think there is a 'mutually ideal' stalemate at the end of this rainbow.
