The background to 1993's "Stalingrad" is the Battle of Stalingrad, a brutal 2-year fight for Russia's most important city that claimed millions of lives, soldiers and civilians.
At Stalingrad, whatever order or loyalty the soldiers brought with them immediately disintegrates, until half of the company is deserting and the other half are dying from the winter climate.
Like a lot of War Movies, "Stalingrad" has its share of "War is Hell" moments, like a body shredded in half by mortar fire and soldiers losing control of their bowels during battle.

Stalingrad, a 1993 German/Swedish co-production from Guenter Rohrbach, the producer of Das Boot, is such a picture.
Stalingrad faithfully re-creates the principal historical aspects of the battle while telling a more intimate tale through the eyes of a small group of German characters.
Stalingrad is packed with tension, and the battle sequences are startlingly realistic, but it's the inescapable message that lingers.

The battle of Stalingrad (August 1942 - February 1943) was the death of Hitler's dream of the conquest of Europe and is probably the most famous battle in history.
There are two well-known videos available: (1) The 1993 German movie Stalingrad (made for the 50th anniversary of the battle) and (2) The 2001 US movie Enemy at the Gates.
The US movie shows matters from the Russian side, taking great liberties with the famous story of the duel between the top Russian snipper Vassili Zaitsev and his German counterpart while using up half the screen time with a fatuous and shallow love story in Hollywood soap opera fashion.

 All-Reviews.com Movie/Video Review: Stalingrad
STALINGRAD by director Joseph Vilsmaier is an effective anti-war film that has more in common with ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT than with any other film.
In contrast, STALINGRAD is an ensemble piece (Fritz Reiser (Dominique Horwitz), Hans von Witzland (Thomas Kretschmann), Manfred "Rollo" Rohleder (Jochen Nickel), GeGe (Sebastian Rudolph), Irina (Dana Vavrova), General Hentz (Martin Benrath) and Otto (Sylvester Groth)) where we don't really know any one soldier as much as we get into their collective psyche.
The movie depicts all Germans above the level of captain to be sadists.

It is a gritty but bleak telling of how the frontlines of Stalingrad must have felt for those German forces fighting there in 1942.
As a result "Stalingrad" has come to mean for the Germans that they were overstretched and the heavy price they paid for the attack led to their end as the Allies assembled against Hitler.
Shoved into the thick of the fighting in Russia, as both the war and the never ending winter drag on, the reasons for fighting become increasingly murky, and the violence becomes even more senseless.
