Taming the Stall   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Stalls on such planes are very different; when a wing stalls first at the tips, a wing drops, you have no aileron control, and a simple stall instantly becomes a snap roll.
The easiest method to modify an existing plane to cure nasty stalling habits is the use of stall strips.
Applied to the inner 20-25% of the wing, the stall strip is a small change to the leading edge that produces turbulence to that part of the wing at higher angles of attack, causing the stall to begin at the root.

Stalls are generally of wood, though sometimes of stone embellished with sculptured foliage and grotesques.
Most of the stalls in English churches and chapter-houses date from pre-Reformation times and were intended for the use of the clergy, chapter, or monks.
Sometimes there is a row of stalls for the choir, because they fulfil part of the duties of the monks, the chanting of the divine office.

In any case, the stall is not symmetrical between the left and right halves of the wing, so the lift between the left and right wings is no longer equal, which therefore results in a rolling departure to the side that has lost the most lift (probably to the left, in this case).
Stall fences work by confining the spanwise flow and preventing a stall from propagating from the root to the tip.
Stall fences, etc. do work in the right situations, provided that the rest of the wing design is done properly, and that the stall fences, etc., are properly integrated into that design.

John Thorp thought the condition was caused by a horizontal tail stall due to high tail loading, and bad airflow across the tail from the wing wake.
Stall strips applied in the correct location to the leading edge of the inboard wing will cause some airflow disturbance before the stall.
Stall strips are not a mandatory modification and you will not see them on every Thorp.

Grumman American AA-1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Other changes included a longer wing to improve rate-of-climb, an anti-servo tab on the elevator along with a centering spring system to increase longitudinal stability and stall strips to improve handling during a stall.
The lack of wing washout, necessitated by the wing interchangeability requirement, meant that stall strips had to be installed to produce acceptable stall characteristics for certification.
The remaining accidents were generally attributed to the AA-1's short endurance (3.3 hours), inability to use short grass strips and high approach speeds (85-90 mph).

Basically this means that the wing is thin, stalls violently, creates tremendous drag at a high angle of attack, and is not for the novice or faint-hearted pilot.
I had tried to demonstrate to Denny that the stall strips create turbulence at high angles of attack and that when this turbulence impacts the elevator it causes severe buffeting.
One flight instructor thought this was the elevator trying to stall because it would buffet or even bang when coming out of a loop.

Europa offers optional stall strips for its kits, which were not installed on the demonstrator, that are designed to provide a less abrupt stall.
During a slow deceleration toward the stall, the stick pull force increases gradually, to a maximum of about 6 or 7 pounds when the Europa is flying a few knots faster than stall speed.
The stall, which occurs at an indicated 35 knots, is again abrupt, with a nose drop in the 15-degree range, but this time the left wing drops about 5 degrees.

The characteristics of the stall will be associated with the initial flow separation location and the manner in which the separation develops as the angle of attack is increased.
Mild wing stall is associated with a separation that occurs at the upper surface trailing edge, which then moves forward with increasing angle of attack in a systematic, smooth fashion.
Abrupt stall characteristics are the result of a sudden separation at the wing leading edge, leading to separation over the entire upper surface of the wing.

The stall characteristics of the basic airfoil(s) are important, but so is the planform, twist distribution, airfoil variations along the wing, Reynolds numbers along the wing, tail design, types of maneuvers during which the stall behavior is a concern, and a bunch of other factors as well.
This is a classic "leading edge stall", where the separation begins at the leading edge, which normally results in the entire airfoil losing nearly all of its lift all at once.
This is where the stall separation begins at the trailing edge and gradually moves forward as the alpha increases.

The stall strips on the leading edge of the centersection are the main culprit.
The stall strip on the leading edge causes the airplane to stall before it can be easily put in a 3 point attitude for touchdown and, the airflow over the elevator is not as effective as it could be in the 3 point attitude.
However, we did notice that at about the time the stall strip caused the inboard section of the wing to pay off the lift generated by the slots was at max.

Vortex strips were added to the leading edge by taping a 1/2" triangular balsa strip from 5 1/2" out to 14", almost covering the inner half of both wings.
The stall speed increased slightly with the addition of the vortex strips but the stall is more gentle, allowing "dragging" of the tail without the risk of dropping a wingtip.
One maneuver that could not be done without the stall strips was the elevator.

Then you know the stalls and spins are'nt "violent" as they could be in a Tomahawk and so thats probably why they wanted something with a little more agression to better train in the real life event of a stall or spin.
Both types of stalls are performed in 30 degree banked turns, using an entry rate of 1 knot per second during turning flight stalls and 3 to 5 knots per second during accelerated stalls.
This is to confirm that the tests to be conducted are, per FAR 23.203(a)(1) and (2), the turning flight stalls with the flaps fully extended and the accelerated turning flight stalls with the flaps extended and retracted.

RC Groups - Tip Stall. Which wing drops?
I've been practicing stalls with my Herr Cloud Ranger, and have noticed that it always seem to drop the left wing when I do stalls, and it gets into a spin.
I would guess if the tip is actually stalling it would be due to some effective angle of attack, since the airflow is 3-d as opposed to just 2-d.
The reality of it is that if you slow the model down to around stalling speed while flying straight ahead, the moment you give any slight turn command with rudder, you are speeding up the wing on the outside and slowing the wing on the inside of the turn.

Aerodynamic devices such as stall strips, vortex generators or even Gurney flaps are being employed to tune rotor performance.
During the wind tunnel tests the effect of these devices on the performance of the appropriate airfoils have been addressed: stall strips or trip wires on DU 93-W210, vortex generators at several chord locations on DU 93-W-210, DU 91-W2-250 and DU 97-W-300.
To study the effect of a diverging trailing edge Gurney flaps and wedges of several heights and height-to-depth ratios have been applied on DU 93-W-210 and DU 91-W2-250.

We thought that it would be best to fit stall strips, as recommended in the Europa pilot's manual, as a stall like this on final approach could ruin your day.
As this product will not affect the stall speed of the aircraft it might obviate the need to fit stall strips provided the stall strips are not required to modify the characteristics of the stall itself.

However some development was felt necessary to further improve the stability, the stall characteristics, and, as can be expected with a new engine, the cooling.
The desired level of longitudinal stability was obtained through the addition of artificial stability (combination of down-springs) and an increase in size of the horizontal stabiliser.
For the stall characteristics, the effect of the following solutions was studied: limitation of the elevator deflection, stall strips, ailerons deflection angle, and vortex generators.

HorseGuard anti cast strip is made from thick, vertically ribbed EVA to give enough purchase to the hooves to enable the horse to push itself over safely.
The anti cast strip is not only extremely efficient in helping horses recover from being cast but it is also highly cost effective as it eliminates the need for banking - less bedding - reduced costs -reduced mucking out times.
The M12 anti casting strip is 5” wide and 6’ long and should be secured horizontally along the walls 18” - 3’3” (depending on size of horse) above the floor using 2” flat headed nails.

With wings on the other hand, wash-out (wing twisted leading edge down towards the tip) is sometimes used intentionally, particularly with tapered-wing designs, as this tends to discourage tip-stall and wing-drop in a stall – a dangerous characteristic near the ground and the source of most stall/spin accidents.
Poor stall characteristics can also be triggered by such apparently trivial things as ill-fitting root fairings and access panels (figure 7).
If the stall handling problem persists, there are methods that can be used to try to tune out the problem, using leading edge stall strips and vortex generators, but these are powerful devices and must not be fitted except as part of a modification request and specially-authorised flight test program.
