It is amazing that gum adhesive on the back of a stamp has come into such prominence and bickering that, before deciding on how to put the stamps in the envelop, a collector has to determine whether his stamps are going to be used or mint copies.
However, since used stamps have no gum, it is not sensible, to use the far more expensive mounting to place used stamps in an album.
It is easy to see why they are called "hinges." They hinge the stamps to the page, allowing them to be lifted in order to examine the back.

  Stamp Collecting
Any stamp that is clean, not torn, badly creased, or made thin by having a stamp hinge or piece of paper badly torn off the back of the stamp, is said to be a stamp in good condition.
Sometimes a stamp has brown spots on it and many new collectors think that, because of this, the stamp is in too bad a condition to be used.
It will also tell you why the stamps were issued (to honour a famous person or to commemorate an event, for example), the year the stamps were issued, the denomination of the stamps in the set, and the colour of each stamp in the set.

Stamp hinge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stamp hinges are small, folded, rectangular pieces of paper coated with a mild gum, used to hold postage stamps onto the pages of a stamp album.
The best stamp hinges are also designed to be "peelable", meaning that the stamp may be removed from the page, and the hinge from the stamp, without any damage to either.
Since the time that unhinged stamps became popular, considerable numbers of old stamps with intact gum have appeared on the market, raising suspicion that many of these have been regummed; some experts have asserted that there are no stamps surviving from the 19th century that have not been hinged.

Even a stamp issued without gum cannot be described as mint if there is a hinge or a hinge remnant on the back, although you might not be able to tell the difference if someone takes the time to soak the remnant off.
When a stamp is described as "unused, hinged," it means that the gum on the back of the stamp has been hinged or is otherwise slightly disturbed, and the stamp is no longer in mint condition.
A stamp hinge is a tiny thing, and it might have disturbed only a tiny area of gum, but whether or not a stamp has ever been hinged can have a significant impact on its value.

To make the removal job easier, the stamp is put into a very damp environment where the gum on the stamp is actually liquefied, that is, made completely liquid or melted, just as it was when first applied.
On the earlier issues of United States stamps, this gum tended to be rather thick, and the gum was intended to be applied entirely across the sheet.
The hinged stamp was gummed from side to side, while the regummed stamp was gummed top to bottom.
