CANOE -- JAM! Music - Pop Encyclopedia - Stampeders
The period from late '68 to the mid '70's was a time of evolution for the new, three-man Stampeders in which they would develop their own sound, a sound that would take them around the world.
The release of The Stampeders' fifth gold album, "New Day," saw the emergence of a more experimental sound and a highly popular single, "Ramona." Their live-album, "Backstage Pass," was recorded at Ontario Place before a sold-out crowd of 17,000 fans.
The failure of the new jazzier, funky-sounding Stampeders to gain critical and commercial acceptance, along with the increased cost of supporting the large band, eventually led to the departure of drummer, Kim Berly.

Skagway, Alaska and Dyea, Alaska during the Gold Rush
The competition for stampeder dollars continued in Dyea and Skagway, Alaska, the towns at the trail heads for the two most popular routes over the mountains, the Chilkoot Pass and the White Pass.
Long before the stampeders began crossing over the Chilkoot Pass, the area of Dyea was used as a seasonal fishing camp.
Stampeders (including many who had purchased tickets to Dyea) were often left to make their own way over to Dyea and the Chilkoot Pass trail.

 Gold Fever!--Determining the Facts 1
Stampeders had to buy enough supplies to last for several months because there were few, if any, opportunities to replenish supplies on the way to the gold fields.
Since many of the stampeders were poor, they had to take the less expensive but extremely difficult route up to the Alaskan panhandle and over mountains to the Yukon River and then to Dawson, the town closest to the gold fields.
Most stampeders who set out in the fall would not even reach the gold fields until the following spring because the Yukon River had frozen and the mountain trails from Skagway and Dyea, Alaska, were almost impassable.

The Stampeders were originally formed as a rock sextet in 1964, playing the bar circuit in Calgary before they set out for Toronto in 1966, playing local clubs and building a name for themselves.
A year later, this version of the Stampeders had their first real success on record with the sublimely beautiful country-rocker "Carry Me," which charted in Canada and got released in America.

The Nome Gold Rush, Alaska Science Forum
If the stampeders of 1899 had followed Johnny Horton's directions to the gold in the 1960 movie "North to Alaska," they would have found themselves treading the cold, salty waters of Norton Sound.
Curiously, thousands of stampeders walked over it on their way to the creeks before they knew it was there.
Most of the credit for the Nome gold rush goes to the trio of John Byrnteson, Erik Lindblom and Jafet Lindeberg, who became known as the "The Three Lucky Swedes," although Lindeberg was actually a Norwegian.
