One of the most interesting recordings in the Krokus discography, Stampede was not at all timely, but with its distinctly non-Krokus lineup -- including the derivative but talented vocalist Peter Tanner -- this 1990 release works as well or better than many of the band's more recognized offerings.
Stampede isn't exactly a real Krokus recording, but it is one of the finest discs with the group's name printed on the cover.

Stampede by Doobie Brothers (lyrics & reviews)
The 'Stampede' album would have to be one of the best Doobie Brothers albums ever but the last to feature lead singer/guitarist Tom Johnston before he was forced, rather against his will, to make way for Michael McDonald and the first to feature new fully-fledged member, Steely Dan and sessions guitarist, Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter.
An album that you can listen to straight through is always good because you don't know how good the next track is going to be, and when you go back and replay the tracks you liked they are even better.
STAMPEDE is the kind of album that you will want to remain in your CD player for days on end simply because the music is just that great and fun to listen to.

Stampede, the five piece 'rock solid' band, have a single out this weekend on Polydor called 'The Othe Side'.
Despite the fact that a live album appeared in our shops late last year, this is Stampede's first real album.
One of the most impressive features of this album is the nimble-fingered antics of Laurence Archer, as displayed on 'Love Letters' when he slips together acoustic and electric guitarwork to marvellous effect, and this is attractively iced with some sugar-sweet keyboards.

 Planet Mellotron Album Reviews: S9
I haven't heard either of their albums, so I've no idea if this single is at all representative of their sound; it's actually a rather so-so cover of the well-known Khachaturian piece delivered with such (speeded-up) aplomb by Dave Edmunds' Love Sculpture a few years earlier.
Anyway, both the album and the EP are available from All My Eye and Betty Martin Music, and are fairly essential for Cardiacs fans unaware of their existence.
Stampede appeared around 1981, rising from the ashes of the Bristol-based Lautrec, while just about hanging on to the fast-fading NWOBHM movement, such as it was.

Stampede - The Quantic Soul Orchestra - Buy @ SmokeCDs.com music cd store   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Made up of Quantic cuts with the addition of two covers, this 10-track masterpiece is unlike any modern soul record and stands as more of tribute to the past masters, conjuring up a blissful rhythmic sound that pulses with soild grooves throughout.
Holland's production lets us in on the fact that this album was recorded in 2003, and not 1968, perfectly capturing the horns and providing a textured sound in which the syncopated grooves sound sublime and sinewy.
Any real soul fan should seek out this release, its a unique and incredibly satisfying album of real music they way it used to be done, and it is sure to get even the most leaden footed listener shaking their thing across the dancefloor.

The Doobie Brothers : Stampede - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Stampede's virtue was its musicianship, which, in addition to new member Baxter, was also showcased in the guises of some impressive guests.
The Doobie Brothers' rootsiest album to date, Stampede was virtuoso soulful countrified rock of a gritty nature, crossing over into blues as well as reaching back to a raw, traditional rock & roll sound that wouldn't have sounded too out of place 20 years earlier.
Baxter's "Précis" was the group's nod to classical and Spanish guitar technique, and "Rainy Day Crossroad Blues" provides guest artist Ry Cooder with a gorgeous canvas on which to paint his slide guitar licks.

However, the group's 1971 self-titled debut album departed significantly from that image and their live sound of the period.
The album reflected a quantum improvement in the band's material as well as the quality and polish of their studio sound.
As the album began to climb the charts and more touring was demanded, the remaining Doobies (Simmons, Knudsen, McDonald and Porter) decided to forge ahead.

The Ponys: Celebration Castle - PopMatters Music Review
When a band puts out a very strong debut album, as The Ponys did with Laced With Romance a year ago, it's easy for some casual listeners to act jaded and unimpressed if the second album lacks the immediacy of the first record.
Plus, although Celebration Castle happens to be produced by none other than Steve Albini, who, along with producing innumerable great albums in the past, is responsible for one of the best-sounding albums of 2005 in High on Fire's Blessed Black Wings, this new album lacks any of the visceral punch many of us had expected.
As good a lead singer as Gummere is (weird voice and all), Adams serves as a good foil to the band's frontman, his songs more indebted to 1960s garage rock than to post punk.

Two months later, a new album was already out, "Tales From Beyond The Groove", this time a white-soul collaboration with Russell Porter under the name The Limp Twins.
The rule of "with each new year a new album" never stopped and in 2005 the second QSO album, "Pushin' On", was issued but afrofunk wasn't the thing to expect.
Much of the album was written and recorded on a laptop in various locations around the world - including Puerto Rico and the Candela studios in San Juan - during an extended period of international gigging and crate-digging.

If you like your electronica on the funky side, this is the remedy to your ailing ears that have grown weary of the pablum fed to them in the modern world.
This album is purposely rough, the 9 or 11 piece band has been recorded and mastered in such a way as to provoke the idea that the recording method was flawed, but then the listener soon realizes that this is a direct result of the intention by senor Will Holland, the madman behind this record.
One last thing, and maybe it's more of a reflection of the label than the artist, but the liner notes describe how "Stampede" was inspired by old, dusty 45's of funk and soul from decades past.

The album thus works well in the now: a fully accessible and reflexive past as a porthole to the present.
Pushin' splits its time between dancefloor-ready instrumentals and swingin' vocals, yet moves from style to style with style from track to track.
While a steady backbeat remains the relative constant in all these cuts, Holland spreads the influences far and wide to give the album a sense of progression.
