Helmsman Gary Stanbury from Appledore lifeboat station is to be awarded the RNLI’s Bronze Medal for Gallantry for saving three crew from the motor boat Kasam on 22 January 2005.
The three crew (two men and a boy of 15 from Barnstaple) were unable to fit their auxiliary engine and raised the alarm by calling 999 on their mobile phone and they also set off a red distress flare.
In demanding conditions, Gary Stanbury skilfully brought the lifeboat alongside the motor boat three times and Crew Members Andrew Hallet and Martin Davis grabbed each of the crew and helped them on board, minutes before their boat sank.
