Dave Matthews Band - Stand Up (Album Commentary va proudestmonkeys.com)
When a band becomes as successful as the Dave Matthews Band has over the past decade, there is bound to be a backlash, both critically and in terms of fan approval.
Stand Up, released almost a decade after the latter, is not a return to those days, but rather, it is an encouraging new direction for the band.
Stand Up will never be confused with the band’s best work, but, when the lights go down again, fans of the Dave Matthews Band will have some new gems to treasure.

Dave Matthews Band - Stand Up
Matthews and his band have amassed a huge audience simply on the basis of their live shows, famous (and equally infamous) for the quintet’s spontaneous and expanded reconstructions of their recordings.
While Matthews’ singular vocal style has always rendered his melodies unorthodox, he reduces them to monochromatic ramblings on the record’s most tuneless numbers, which include the two-note "Louisiana Bayou," a tale of cocaine, abuse and murder, and the title cut, built around a pungent but endlessly looping riff.
Matthews, in a recent Rolling Stone cover story, said he believes most things are the result of "a miraculous indifference," but that he is attracted to the idea of creation being a series of miracles.

Dave Matthews has a distinctive voice which immediately demands recognition regardless of which artists he is working with at the time.
Dave's voice was always dead center and almost always the most important element in the track.
The one time that Dave's voice slipped into the background it was obvious that his voice was in a supporting role to the instruments.

Dave takes a snippet of an interesting story here, which appears to be about a forbidden love that put him on the run from a girl's crazy father who wanted to shoot him when he found out what was going on.
Dave even goes to far as to recycle an entire verse from the song we just heard before this one (or was it the other way around?), which I guess is supposed to connect the two songs in some way, but it just comes across as lazy.
Dave completely goes off the deep end, attempting to imitate some sort of a Cajun accent or something as he tells a grim tale of murder in a swampy locale.

Dave's voice sounds way too gravely and hoarse during the entire album.
The band experiment with some musical edges with soft R&B on "Stolen Away on 55th & 3rd," and the Southern Country feel on "Louisiana Bayou," but there are a few flaws here and there.
But overall, the Dave Matthews Band haven't lost their musical cool and conclude with two more great tracks in "Steady As We Go," and "Hunger For the Great Light," containing the spiritual honesty and raw emotion the band is so well-known for.

When the members of the Dave Matthews Band commenced recording STAND UP, they did so with the express intent of creating an album markedly different from their past efforts.
Whether on the loop-like electric mandolin lines on "American Baby," the spooky, slowed-down vocal on "Stand Up (For It)," or the psychedelic echo effect on the chorus of "Everybody Wake Up (Our Finest Hour Arrives)," artistic freedom is in the air here, and the musicians sound like they're having the time of their lives.
Of course, longtime fans of the Dave Matthews Band will find all of their favorite elements here, including syncopated, world-music-inspired grooves, jaw-dropping drum chops, a few extended jams, and the dark, immediately identifiable singing of Matthews himself.

For starters, Matthews pumps up the energy level surprisingly often, as on the title track, which uses a martial drumbeat to anchor a bottom end that doesn't politely suggest that folks shake their groove thang but rather forces them onto the dance floor.
The vibe of Stand Up is slightly different than the average DMB album, but for those who value a thrill ride as much as a cruise, it's definitely worth buckling up for.
Dave's lyrics feels channeled from a deeper side of himself at times and the music being pure magic with this special chemistry that this band is known for.

While Dave Matthews Band leaves room for improvisation in most of the songs on the album, the end result is a hollow sound with room for improvement.
And so "Stand Up", while still a little out of tune with their roots of "Before These Crowded Streets" and "Under The Table And Dreaming", is still innovative and fresh.
"Stand Up" may not be their most memorable release, but the band's bravery and effort in being adventurous with their sound and musical personality will be enough to win much of their fanbase for future helpings.

In the four-plus years since Dave Matthews Band last convened to write and record a new album, its members have toured the country several times over; released four live albums and the rejiggered leftovers collection Busted Stuff; and taken time out as the band's frontman recorded a successful, if lightweight, solo debut.
Dave Matthews Band has always operated on a pleasure principle that has endeared it to nice folks everywhere: the adventure and instrumental skill of jazz music in a framework your average rock fan can understand, delivered by unassuming guys you don't have to pay a two-drink minimum to hear.
If the thoroughly good-natured Stand Up proves anything, it's that Dave Matthews Band has learned to temper its considerable chops with enough restraint and pop smarts that it no longer seems possible for even the most ardent punks to hate the group.

Where 2001's manicured Everyday turned DMB into a world-beating, chart-busting juggernaut, Stand Up is the sound of a veteran outfit navigating between jammy mojo and pop-wise charm.
Batson met with each band member individually, taping instrumental ideas from which Stand Up's fourteen tracks were later constructed: The result is a disc whose unfussy demeanor conceals a mountain of overdubs and deftly edited jams.

The latest record by Dave Matthews Band is called Stand Up, just like the second Jethro Tull album, leading some — okay, maybe just me — to wonder if that peremptory title is some sort of nod to a group that can be seen as the DMB's spiritual forebears.
One of Matthews' gifts is that he can come on like an unrepentant lech one minute —; as on the languidly lusty ''Dreamgirl'' — then turn around and espouse a spiritual humanism that's wholly convincing.
Stand Up is no ill-advised attempt to go gangsta (although that would be something to hear).
