He said, "I'm a big fan of Jethro Tull, and I listen to this record every night before I go on stage!" Then he staggered off down a corridor, leaving our poor sound engineer wondering what kind of odd people might be tagging along with the Pearl Jam party.
While not as well known as Jethro Tull's early Seventies efforts Aqualung and Thick As A Brick, Stand Up is a pivotal work in the Tull canon and, along with King Crimson's In the Court Of The Crimson King, one of the seminal albums of the prog-rock movement.
Recorded in late 1968 at London's Morgan Studios, Stand Up was only the quartet's second album, but it marked a profound departure from the British blues-rock they'd been cultivating since their formation in 1967.

Stand Up is what many consider the first true Tull sounding album and is much better than "This Was".
Overall Jethro Tull's second effort is a step up from their first in most ways, and it doesn't suffer from the dreaded sophomore jinx that hurts so many band's second albums.
Stand Up is one of Jethro Tull's finest albums---Aqualung is the other---where frontman Ian Anderson writes great material supported by great playing, and unlike some of his later work, is not overly long and self indulgent.

The guy with the flute is multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire and gentlemen farmer Ian Anderson; Jethro Tull is the name of the band.
Jethro Tull emerged in the late sixties as a hard-edged blues band, who could have easily gone the stylistic route of Cream, John Mayall or the early Fleetwood Mac.
Tull would make better use of acoustic stringed instruments and woodwinds than just about any other their peers during the 70s.

In their heyday, Tull were able to easily weather line-up changes, critical snubbing and touring catastrophes with nary a stumble, thanks in large part to Anderson's indomitable vision.
Tull concerts are an annual event for me since I got into the band, and even with a few duds here and there, I can't think of another band with as many great albums as Jethro Tull.
Both Stand Up and Benefit are blues based, which is a nice contrast to their later (and to me, preferable) classically constructed stuff like Thick As A Brick or A Passion Play.

Tull originally emerged from the blues-rock scene in England, and were famously bad for several years.
This, of course, is Tull's most famous work; the guitar riff from "Aqualung" is among the most famous in rock music, and "Locomotive Breath" was used in a beer commercial in the 1990s.
Tull fans of the day were in for a real treat with this double album: Rather than containing new material, Living contained many singles previously not available on album, such as "Sweet Dream", "Witches Promise", "Life Is A Long Song", and of course the title track.

Tull's third album finds them pulling definitively away from their blues-rock beginnings and heading towards the folk-influenced prog-rock that would become their trademark.
After hearing a few Jethro Tull tracks (and obviously loving them from the start!) I decided to purchase an album and chose Benefit purely on the simplicity of the cover.
Stand out songs, apart from those mentioned are With You There to Help Me, Alive and Well and Living In (replaced by Teacher on the US release) and Inside, although they are all good.

This excellent album was released in 1969 and shows Jethro Tull starting to head in the direction of prog rock that would come to full fruition on albums like Thick as a Brick (1972) and A Passion Play (1973).
All in all, this is an excellent album from the early phase of Jethro Tull and is very highly recommended along with the follow up album Benefit (1970).
The second album by Jethro Tull is one of my favorites by the band.

The Broadsword and the Beast ~ Jethro Tull
As the liner notes from Ian say, Stand Up went immediately to #1 in the UK charts, and I can see why (Led Zep was getting a little nervous maybe, and invited Tull on the U.S. tour, perhaps to duke it out live?).
This album sees Tull in transition between their blues beginnings and the invidualistic musical path that they would later take.

While I do not have the MFSL "Stand Up", I did compare "Living in the Past" and "Sweet Dream" (these are bonus tracks on the remaster) to Steve's Original Masters versions of these same songs.
The only one that comapares is the MOFI Stand Up which is just a great disc.
However, I could be the only person here who didn't like the MoFi Stand Up (tape fault at the start of a New Day Yesterday) and Thick as a Brick - much more dull than my memory of first pressing Chrysalis UK vinyl.

 Stand Up by Jethro Tull CD
Some instruments seem slightly buried in what sounds like a new mix like some of the vocals in track 4 and the bass guitar in one of the initial tracks and this mix makes it less enjoyable for me but very slightly.
As for the music alot of people consider this their best album and though I haven't heard many Jethro Tull albums I'm very impressed with it.
Tull has taken a quantum leap into rock with this album, leaving Abrahams' Blues-Jazz behind.
