Since an ordinary candle is not a sufficiently accurate standard, the unit of intensity has been defined in various ways.
Later the international candle was taken as a standard; not actually a candle, it is defined in terms of the luminous intensity of a specified array of carbon-filament lamps.
Illumination is given in footcandles, i.e., so many times the illumination given by a standard candle at 1 ft. Another unit of illumination is the lux, one lux being equal to one lumen incident per square meter of illuminated surface.

In a dark room, this crude device can be used to test the accuracy of Newton's empirical relationship by simply measuring the cut-off distances to light intensities produced by 1, 4, 9, and 16 candles.
With the calibration candle mounted 25 cm behind the screen, at 1 base unit, the cut-off distances occur at 1, 2, 3 and 4 base units, in agreement with Newton's I

 Standard Candles in Astronomy
A standard candle is a class of astrophysical objects, such as supernovae or variable stars, which have known luminosity due to some characteristic quality possessed by the entire class of objects.
Thus, if an extremely distant object can be identified as a standard candle then the absolute magnitude M (luminosity) of that object is known.
Therefore it can be used as standard candle to determine their true distance.
