EH.Net Encyclopedia: A History of the Standard of Living in the United States
During many years of teaching, I have introduced the topic of the standard of living by asking students to pretend that they would be born again to unknown (random) parents in a country they could choose based on three of its characteristics.
These calculations understate the growing disparity in the material standard of living because several African countries today fall significantly below the average, whereas it is unlikely that they did so in 1820 because GDP for the continent as a whole was close to the level of subsistence.
Americans were very tall by global standards in the early nineteenth century as a result of their rich and varied diets, low population density, and relative equality of wealth.

Standard of living in India - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The standard of living in India is modest and is constantly improving.
India's low spending on power, construction, transportation, telecommunications and real estate, at $31 billion or 6% of GDP, compared to China's spending of $260 billion or 20% of its GDP in 2002 has prevented India from sustaining a growth rate of around 8%.
One of the critical problems facing India's economy is the sharp and growing regional variations among India's different states and territories in terms of per capita income, poverty, availability of infrastructure and socio-economic development.

Though India's growth rate is still significantly higher than that of China (0.58% in 2005), it should be remembered that India is reducing her population growth rate in a peaceful, democratic way without any coercion.

The culprit that is leading to this loss of jobs and the continued erosion of the American standard of living--as this documentary points out--is outsourcing or the global movement of American and other Western corporations away from their own domestic workforce to cheaper overseas labor markets.
India, which for decades has possessed a tremendous number of highly skilled, less expensive workers is but the first of many Third World countries who will benefit from this practice.
And, all of this outsourcing has led to the raising of the standard of living in India and the decline of the standard of living in America.
