Topic: Standard test image

ASIS&T 2006 - ImageCLEF and ImageCLEFmed: Toward standard test collections for image storage and retrieval research
Whether researchers are working on the development of a taxonomy or a thesaurus for an image collection or testing a content based image retrieval algorithm, a standard test collection is invaluable if their research results are to have any wider impact.
There is a need for standard image test collections in order to address the disparity in image research, in terms of materials (images) used, and compare research results across studies.
The main purpose of this panel is to sensitize the image research community in general and ASISandT’s SIG/VIS () in particular with respect to the image retrieval evaluations and encourage researchers to make an effort in adopting standard image collections for their future research.

Standard test image - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In order to intuitively test the effects of an image-processing algorithm on a "natural picture" a number of test images are in common use in the image-processing field.
These images are generally chosen because they present a range of challenges to image reconstruction algorithms, such as the reproduction of fine detail and textures, sharp transitions and edges, and uniform regions.
The most famous image is the Lenna image, from a photograph of 1972 Playboy bunny Lena Soderberg.

Image compression - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Image compression is the application of data compression on digital images.
In effect, the objective is to reduce redundancy of the image data in order to be able to store or transmit data in an efficient form.
Lossy methods are especially suitable for natural images such as photos in applications where minor (sometimes imperceptible) loss of fidelity is acceptable to achieve a substantial reduction in bit rate.

Image processing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the broadest sense, image processing is any form of information processing for which both the input and output are images, such as photographs or frames of video.
Digital image processing techniques are generally more versatile, reliable, and accurate; they have the additional benefit of being easier to implement than their analog counterparts.
Image processing brings some new concepts, such as connectivity and rotational invariance, that are meaningful only for two-dimensional signals.

JOT: Journal of Object Technology - Synthetic Image Sequence Compression, Douglas Lyon
This is computed by subtracting the original image from the quantized image, squaring the resulting error pixels, summing their color components, then dividing by the total number of pixels.
As this can change from pixel to pixel, and image to image, one method for computing bit rate is to measure the image (or image sequence) file size, in bits, then divide by the total number of pixels.
On the other hand, if the original image is used as the start image, the output for the first image is almost identical to the initial image, for a single frame, and the SNR for such an image is 33 dB.

DM's Esoteric Programming Languages - LenPEG
Image compression algorithms are traditionally tested on a well-known standard image, so that ready comparisons can be made between different algorithms.
The accepted standard in the image processing community is the image Lenna (also known as Lena).
For the standard test image the new LenPEG 3 compresses the image so efficiently that data storage space is actually freed on the computer right up to the entire capacity of the storage devices.

SozoTek test and measurement systems analyze imager performance on 18 quality parameters that evaluate the performance of the image capture, image rendering, camera module system and camera module processing functions and how these elements work together to generate a digital image.
SozoTek’s unique Image Quality Score (IQS), a value from 1 to 10 that comprehensively summarizes the merits of a given device, is calculated via a highly scientific, mathematical process that represents the expert knowledge of SozoTek image scientists compiled into a single grade.
SozoTek image quality test results use practical, standard, and consistent language and imaging industry quality terms enabling clear quality performance communication throughout the supply chain among wireless carriers, device and component manufacturers, and network and application developers.

However, on the SMPTE test image, some mild curvature was observed at the edges, demonstrating that digital photography is still subject to issues such as lens quality and camera technique (Figure 6).

Gold standard -   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Through the 1860–1871 period various attempts to resurrect bi-metallic standards were made, including one based on the gold and silver franc, however, with the rapid influx of silver from new deposits, the expectation of scarcity of silver ended.
Bryan argued against the gold standard in his Cross of gold speech in 1896, comparing the gold standard (and specifically its effects on western farmers) to the crown of thorns worn by Jesus at his crucifixion.
Hence, notes circulating in any "partial" gold standard will either be redeemed for their face value of gold (which would be higher than its actual value) — this constitutes a "bank run"; or the market value of such notes will be viewed as less than a gold coin representing the same amount.

 The RS232 Standard
It was thought that a standard was needed first to ensure reliable communication, and second to enable the interconnection of equipment produced by different manufacturers, thereby fostering the benefits of mass production and competition.
If the full EIA232 standard is implemented as defined, the equipment at the far end of the connection is named the DTE device (Data Terminal Equipment, usually a computer or terminal), has a male DB25 connector, and utilizes 22 of the 25 available pins for signals or ground.
When the DTE initiates such a test, transmitted data is passed through the local modem, the telephone line, the remote modem, and back, to exercise the channel and confirm its integrity.
