In physics, the moment of force (often just moment, though there are other quantities of that name such as moment of inertia) is a quantity that represents the magnitude of force applied to a rotational system at a distance from the axis of rotation.
The SI unit for moment is the newton meter (Nm).
The principle of moments is derived from Archimedes' discovery of the operating principle of the lever.

"Standardized Tests: Do They Ultimately Help or Hurt Students? " by Laurie Perez
Since standardized tests have a great deal of power, students are forced to prepare for them rather than learn valuable knowledge, simply for the sake that they can graduate or enter into the program or school of their choice.
While many people agree that standardized tests should be used as a means to gauge where schools are in comparison to others, 80 percent of respondents (in the Public Agenda study) did not want the results of a single test to determine whether a student should graduate to the next grade (Wood 2).
Standardized tests have the ability to show parents and teachers where their students, as well as the school, stand in comparison to other schools.

It is testimony to our societal belief in the power of standardized tests that we would permit so many levels of testing to remain in place, all at the same time and at very high cost.
4 In addition to other standards, this joint statement expects teachers to be trained to choose and develop proper assessment methods; to administer, score, and interpret assessment results; to connect those results to specific decisions; to assign grades appropriately; and to communicate effectively about student achievement.
Since our standardized assessments of learning have been developed by professionals and are currently in place, they are poised to detect any improvements in the level or rate of student achievement.

 Standardized Testing and Its Victims
Standardized testing has swelled and mutated, like a creature in one of those old horror movies, to the point that it now threatens to swallow our schools whole.
For decades, critics have complained that many standardized tests are unfair because the questions require a set of knowledge and skills more likely to be possessed by children from a privileged background.
Standardized tests tend to measure the temporary acquisition of facts and skills, including the skill of test-taking itself, more than genuine understanding.

Standardized tests assume that knowledge remains unchanged over time; what was learned in one context leads to only one correct response to a test question.
The use of standardized tests reflects the high social value of the ability to recall trivial bits of information (Hunter, 1996) and a growing disregard for any type of academic skill which is not linguistic or logical in nature.
The validity of standardized tests is questionable whenever there is an attempt made to generalize the subject-matter knowledge and the skills possessed by the students (Jantzie, 1996).

Standardized achievement tests should not be used to evaluate the quality of students' schooling because there are meaningful mismatches between what is tested and what is supposed to be taught, and those mismatches are often unrecognized.
Standardized achievement tests should not be used to evaluate the quality of students' schooling because the quest for wide score-spread tends to eliminate items covering important content that teachers have emphasized and students have mastered.

 Structures for Standards
To fully outline the problems with standardized tests is beyond the scope of this article, but several points should be recognized by every concerned educator, including the failure of the tests to measure high standards and the failure of the tests to measure progress toward standards.
At the end of the school year a standardized test is administered and the students in the wealthy school score on an average 85% and the students in the poor school score an average of 55%.
Because standardized tests view all skills through the filter of the verbal-linguistic and mathematical intelligences, if every student is to be assessed on the same content in the same way, we create a strong bias in favor of students strong in the academic intelligences and against students strong in other intelligences.

Standard scores enable us to measure the variation of two variables and to compare their variation in common units (of standard scores) and magnitudes, regardless of their original units and magnitudes.
Since the standard deviation is the square root of the variance (Definition 3.2), and the correlation is computed through data standardized by the standard deviation, we can translate the results back into variance terms by squaring the correlation.

The main reason that a good objective, standardized test is fairer than a good performance test is that, for a test of reasonable length, a good standardized test can probe a much larger and more representative sample of the subject (domain) being sampled.
Having looked briefly into the history of the development of standardized tests to assess writing skill, one might wonder if a demand to replace a standardized with a prolonged essay performance assessment isn't a regression to the 1920s and 1940s, when less reliable essay tests were the only ones available.
If machine-scored standardized tests were bringing less discouraging news, or if educationists could produce workable ideas about how to make their results better, educationists would not be so set in attacking standardized tests.

By standardizing the service request and response into an XML-based document that will be exchanged among service providers and service requesters instead of data objects and functions, the proposed approach for developing and using geospatial Web services will significantly improve the communication and implementation process for geospatial Web services.
The goal of this research is how to standardize and simplify the implementation process of geospatial Web services in particular, and Web services in the general domain, to enable the service requesters to get the appropriate result without needing to know how service providers have developed the Web services.
The next great challenge will be to standardize the service template into the XML document in order to build a new generation of Web services in the general domain with self-describable data and service semantics.
