A standing committee is a subunit of a political or deliberative body established in a permanent fashion to aid the parent assembly in accomplishing its duties.
A standing committee is a Congressional committee permanently authorized by United States House of Representatives and United States Senate rules.
The Committee on Committees assigns Republican representatives to their committee(s), while the Steering and Policy Committee is in charge of assigning Democratic representatives to committees.

The Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (Chinese: 中国共产党中央政治局常务委员会 pinyin: Zhōngguó Gòngchǎndǎng Zhōngyāng Zhèngzhìjú Chángwù Wěiyuánhuì) is a committee whose membership varies between 5 and 9 and includes the top leadership of the Communist Party of China.
Formally the membership of the Committee is approved by the Central Committee.
At the 2002 16th Party Congress, the Standing Committee was expanded to include nine members.

Senator John Rowan of Kentucky opposed including agriculture among standing committees because he felt that agriculture was outside "the scope of the powers" of the Senate.
Late on Friday, December 9, 1825, the Senate, on a vote of 22 to 14, voted to create the three new committees and the Committee on Agriculture was born.
When the Agriculture Committee reported the salt bill to the floor there was an extended debate, with amendments, that eventually referred the issue to the Finance Committee.
