Standing on a Beach is a singles compilation released by the British rock band The Cure in May, 1986, marking a decade since the band's founding in 1976.
The title is taken from the opening lyrics of The Cure's debut single "Killing an Arab", which was released prior to their debut album, making these four words the first Cure lyrics ever heard on record.

No matter how carefully crafted the Cure's individual albums were, their finest moments occured on singles like these, when they distilled their essence into surprisingly catchy, but decidedly left-of-center, pop singles.
"Standing on a Beach" not only selects highlights from their uneven early albums, it collects many of the group's terrific non-LP singles.
It's a definitive retrospective of the Cure and is one of the finest albums of the '80s.
We've taken them to the beach before, but I think this was the first time they'll actually remember playing in the waves.
By the standards of the California beaches that I am used to, it is very unusual to see plants growing right up to the water's edge as they do there--especially as the place where the girls are standing is so sandy and plant-less.
I am sure that that memory is as precious to your daughter as it is to you: a physical sensation of being loved that she will remember always, and bring up later when life is not so sweet.
Standing On A Beach might be an attractive entrée into The Cure’s discography, but those drawn in by select singles (“Boys Don’t Cry,” “Close To Me,” “The Lovecats”) may be disappointed that more wonderful surprises aren’t in store.
The band’s early recordings were murky and more than a little affected, suggesting Echo & The Bunnymen with an eye toward giddy bubblegum pop.
Now something more of a history lesson, Standing On A Beach is still the best way to test these waters.
The figure faced the rear of the house so it could be seen by the honoured guests who sat with the host chief at potlatches.
During a potlatch, the oblong wooden ball held by the Standing on the Beach was taken from its hands and was rolled into the audience -- whoever grabbed it won a prize.
There were songs associated with this game; the right to sing them and the right to the game itself were inherited.

This album was a major part of my formative years, I first overindulged in alcohol to the tune of 10:15, fell madly in love with a boy and endlessly played Standing on the Beach as testiment to my love (!).
Standing on a Beach is the CD which the track list follows the videos released and contains non A-side songs like Other Voices, etc.
After it had been there for maybe a year, I took it home and listened to it, that was when I became one of the many awed fans of the Cure.
Please note that in this country at least, "Standing on a Beach" was just the cassette version of "Staring at the Sea", but with a few different "bonus" tracks (http://www.planetdis.com/cure/discography.html), so the "Beach"CD may be identical to the "Sea" one!
As all the "bonus" cassette tracks are on "Join the Dots", you may be better off buying "Staring at the Sea" and "Join the Dots" on CD.

Really, I mean given how much of a Reverse King Midas that Bush is (everything he touches turns to shit) Sharansky's reputation stands to be really tarnished by him.
You could read Steven King on the beach while working on your tan, keeping an eye on the kids and thinking about what you're going to do tomorrow, and still get most of what the book has to offer.
Although Wish and Disintegration (1989) played off moments of laughter and shade, putting MTV-oriented singles against darker, more melancholy fare, the new album fractures in a score of new directions, the most audible involving a string quartet."
So you see, they figured that Wild Mood Swings would be the end of it all, but oh no, us Cure fans still wanted more...so they have gone on to make a 'sequel' to "Standing on a Beach", The Cure's compilation album which had all of their songs from '79 to '86 on it.
we'd been in the studio all night and, i mean, why should we stand?
